I wish more reporting on this made the point that novelists won't be displaced by LLMs suddenly producing literature instead of story mulch, but because decision makers focused only on the bottom line, who don't understand what makes a good book, will be persuaded story mulch has got 'good enough'.
New research by @mctd.bsky.social shows the impact of generative AI on authors in the UK. They found over a third of novelists report their income has already been negatively impacted by AI and 85% expect their future income will be negatively impacted.

I used to handle interlibrary loans for a public library. ILL is a magnificent expression of the idea that readers deserve books, and books deserve readers. It’s libraries everywhere pooling their resources for the benefit of everyone.

Killing IMLS could have killed ILL.

This is great news. 📚

There is a book club organization out there emailing authors telling them the club will feature their work for a "modest fee" for "branded materials" etc. Do not fall for this nonsense. You should never, as a writer, have to pay for such things.

my jaw is on the floor and yet im completely unsurprised. trump’s only political conviction is that he loves a handsome winner
A reporter asks if Mamdani stands by calling Trump a fascist. Mamdani starts to give a delicate answer.

Trump (smiles, pats Mamdani's arm): "That's OK, you can just say yes. It's easier. I don't mind."

Prometheus stole fire from the gods to give to the people.

Techbros, through AI, are stealing fire from the people and using it to warm themselves.

What precious fucking irony that is.

Totally agree. And I’d like to see a triple bill of Eddington, One Battle and Sinners as a portrait of America -
Why Ari Aster’s Eddington deserves a reappraisal.

On second watch, this widely panned satire – now on digital platforms – plays less like absurdist parody and more as dead-on portraiture of our polarised, hyper-online moment.

Seconded. And this extract will demonstrate that it's not only fascinating but USEFUL.
I really cannot overstate how much you should read this book, might be the best bit of non fiction I've read this year

WTF
1/ The US Government has quietly removed a memorial to Black soldiers who died in World War II from the Netherlands American Cemetery in Margraten, South Limburg. The move follows a complaint from the right-wing Heritage Foundation to the American Battle Monuments Commission. ⬇️

An excellent analysis Andrew. The candidates’ success was driven by their two mantras: their authenticity and to deliver affordability outcomes for the electorate. Transferring that to a UK election will be interesting.

Excellent and learned thread from George here
1. In the wake on Mamdani’s win, we’ll see a lot more far right anti-urban sentiment. Here’s a thread on its roots and evolution.

The idea that the city is evil and corrupt, and the countryside innocent and pure, goes back a long way: to Theocritus in Alexandria, and to the Old Testament. 🧵
