Grumpy Black crone who likes to think and explore (and seek mindfulness, within reason). In pfp: a hedgehog with a kente kufi on its head, and red laser eyes. Not chill.
Currently rearing an aging, unsociable 🦔 rescue.
Pinned
Quick intro:
- mid-30s, Fenty 450, Niger Deltan descent 👋🏿
- known elsewhere for locked account where I vented about bad grad school XP
- older now; venting isn’t good for my blood pressure
- non-professional account: expect cooking, plants, mourning pets, deconstruction of fundie upbringing (1/)

And now AI slop is taking a serious bite out of SocArXiv.

Thread:
In light of record submission rates and a large volume of AI-generated slop, SocArXiv recently implemented a policy requiring ORCIDs linked in the OSF profile of submitting authors, and narrowing our focus to social science subjects. Today we are taking two more steps:

If you're wondering ‘What do you mean it reads back to front as well as front to back?’

Well, I'll try to quickly explain what “THE SPECTACULAR SPACE LOOP” is ⬇️

NEW: AI “recipe slop” is overrunning search and social. Food creators say Google’s AI Overviews and glossy fake food pics are drowning out real, tested recipes — collapsing traffic and setting home cooks up for disaster, especially this Thanksgiving.

This kind of BS is so insulting to those of us who put deliberate care and thought into crafting scientific figures. The images are supposed to SHOW SOMETHING and to CLARIFY information. What is the point of having an image full of nonsense?? #fuckAI
Uhh,,, Figure 1 shows you... what exactly? Trying to understand Medical fryrmbial, runctitional features and mum's legs going through concrete.

This whole article is a bit of a disaster. And it's very difficult to find other published work for the author. Strange! 🧪

If I open an article and the splash banner is AI slop, I close the tab. If you don't have the bare minimum of discernment to not do that, what else do you consider "good enough" to publish?
I don’t know if anyone else notices or cares, but when I see a presentation in which the speaker uses obviously generated-AI images to illustrate their slides, it makes me immediately less confident in whatever other content they’re presenting.

The only thing less human than these AI dub performances is the decision to sign off on them

A company this big can pay human actors a decent wage, not produce slop that intentionally removes the human element.

Honestly, if I could do college over, I’d just go at an older age, and never talk to my father (and 90% of his family) again. Life would’ve been a lot simpler.

Once again, my thought that very traditional cultures will embed themselves in scamming and deception in this capitalist society is still true. I would read someone’s dissertation on this, because I’m tired of 🇳🇬 never being far from the nonsense.

Personally found this out in the Great Recession, with a biology degree. I learned a lot, but the market said it wasn’t worth anything but lab tech work (if professional schools weren’t your thing). So I worked for years, got the advanced degree and switched to a related path.

Look, if you're not an expert you wouldn't know, but this chart is bullshit. They could not possibly measure this as 1. How can you tell for sure? There's no reliable automated way. 2. You're not counting the many sites that are blocking crawlers now.

But there's an even more important reason...
the internet is now a photocopy of a photocopy of a photocopy of a photocopy and so on

Things I do that reflect how I think about *things*: cleaning a library book once it’s in my possession.

I never particularly learned this (though I keep my own books in great condition), but some paperbacks get grimy in circulation and need a gentle clean. Animism or anthropomorphism? Who knows?

To be fair, there has been a millennia long disinformation campaign positing that women must be quiet and demure so displaying any sort of intense emotion is quickly silenced by the patriarchy.

Her righteous outrage is reduced to “hysteria”.

Her bitterness at being betrayed “being standoffish”.
