Grumpy Black crone who likes to think and explore (and seek mindfulness, within reason). In pfp: a hedgehog with a kente kufi on its head, and red laser eyes. Not chill. “Coward American” — an opp.
Currently rearing an aging, unsociable 🦔 rescue.
Pinned
Quick intro:
- mid-30s, Fenty 450, Niger Deltan descent 👋🏿
- known elsewhere for locked account where I vented about bad grad school XP
- older now; venting isn’t good for my blood pressure
- non-professional account: expect cooking, plants, mourning pets, deconstruction of fundie upbringing (1/)
Ok, hedgie is deeply sleeping. Put him next to his bowl. He just stayed asleep (and he’s warm!). Placed him back in his burrow. The space heater and heat lamps are working, cage temp is OK, so let me drift off. Compassion for me, compassion for hedgie.

Did a self-compassion meditation tonight and it helped so much. There is sadness and grief under all this “feeling off” and I’m glad to be reminded to be gentle with myself.

Wrote for @theglobeandmail.com:
I spent months hearing from African survivors of Myanmar scam camps, where trafficking victims are forced to run scams targeting westerners. Chinese criminals & at least one pro-junta militia cooperate to dish out horrific abuse against migrants to ensure compliance.
Africans are being confined and beaten in scam camps in Myanmar
Migrants toil for long hours on social-media platforms, targeting people with crypto and romance scams

this is a good way, as @booch.com frames it here, to flip the pygmalion displacement back on the perpetrators and enablers; more here: olivia.science/ai/#pygmalion; PDF: osf.io/preprints/so...

Hedgie has been up every hour tonight, eating or drinking (or randomly running). I was just about to yeet him out of his burrow.

Moved his food bowl to another spot, so he can get a little exercise (found him paws first in his dinner, like I didn’t teach him table manners).

Morning.

This is disgusting, and dehumanizing, and unfortunately coming to damn near every platform you can think of. Multilingualism isn’t an inconvenience to be “solved” by technology. We have to push back.
Discovered today that Instagram had turned on (without my opt-in) automatic AUDIO translation of any reel that shows up in my feed not in English USING AI TO MIMIC THE SPEAKER’S VOICE and WOW it was creepy and upsetting.

You can turn it off in “Language & Translations” in Settings. 🙅🏻‍♀️

Ran a 25-minute interval session to process this whirlwind of a weekend, and workday/hedgie care day.

It helped, a little. A mental distraction that got some blood pumping, but I still listened to my body. My shins and peroneal muscles are stronger. I’m sweaty, but I’m not exhausted.

So, I overslept my therapy alarm, and left the rice I steamed this afternoon on the stove for hours.

I literally just crashed after work, because I couldn’t anymore. 😭😭😭

I’ve never done this before.

Hedgie woke up an hour ago. I waited a bit, fed and medicated him and he’s still alert. Just the usual hedgie toddle. Sharp reflexes, bright eyes. The space heater is facing his cold corner and I’ve spaced out the heat lamps a bit. Waiting for the thermostat to reach full temp.

Stress relief tincture and some deep breathing to decompress. Hedgie had me worried today but I’m thankful I caught him in time. I just don’t like the way my heart spikes with sudden stress, no matter how calm I might look. May he stay warm during these cold nights (with my space heater on auto).
