It's also hard to say your country is falling to fascism and not also say people should be preserving every possible document by any means necessary.

Reading The Purple Sapphire by John Taine (pseudonym for Eric Temple Bell). I shouldn't compare them but I feel spoiled by A. Merritt. It's hard going from Merritt's ecstatic purple prose to Taine's very matter-of-fact writing.

The thing is, are you really? I sympathize with authors saying they're sick of people talking about archiving and access when they just want the latest Romantasy for free but .. Those international archive projects of millions of OOP docs and textbooks do not exist as cover to distribute Romantasy!

for the record, I pirate 100% of the books I read, but I also buy physical copies of 100% of them for my shelf, and most of them were out of print to begin with, and of those a large percentage are in the public domain

Utena gets so much cardio before a duel. Me, I'd be winded for half an hour after reaching the top of those stairs.

the Whos should not be capitalists. they should not have a crooked mayor. they should not attend swinger parties. this is all wrong for a Dr. Seuss movie.

I hate that the Ron Howard Grinch has been canonized as a Christmas classic. even at 8 years old watching it in a theater (the prime age!) I knew making the Whos normal human-like jerks was a fully wrong misread.

Saddening thread about the horror of live-action Suess.

Though it gave me a chance to plug the exception, the utterly bizarre and rather wonderful 5000 Fingers of Dr T, made in the 1950s. Just bonkers.

star trek is about a utopian vision of the future bordering on fantasy where people someday will be able to make good choices about complicated problems by talking to each other and involving people who know about things
The thing about Star Trek is that the majority of it has the crew spending most of the episode trying to figure out, through arguing and investigating, what's the right thing to do in a complicated situation and I don't think any shows do that now? Like in a Very Special Episode but not all the time

Today is the birthday of artist Lou Fine (Nov. 26, 1914-July 24, 1971.) One of the greats of the Golden Age, he was the artist that early creators like Jack Kirby wanted to be like.

"Assume everyone I interact with online is struggling with their mental health" has only become a more important guiding principle in the past couple years
My personal guidelines for dealing with people on social media:

Assume everyone is a friend you haven't yet gotten to know.
Assume everyone is struggling with their mental health
Don't promise any emotional labor you might not be able to provide
If someone seems like a hater, disengage right away

Roy Lichtenstein is a fucking parasite who made millions— and his foundation STILL makes big bucks— off the work of comics artists. He refused to credit them, or share a penny with them.

His thievery is no different than AI scraping is now.
Roy Lichtenstein is STILL a beloved pop artist, and everyone knew from day one that his work was repurposed comic panels.

That's like saying "Andy Warhol was once a beloved pop artist but today is recognized as a man who plagiarized his pieces based on soup cans."

That was the point of Pop Art.
