Unconstitutionally taking money that the law says must be spent on one purpose & using it for something else—when it's to establish personalist control over the FUCKING MILITARY—is about as dangerous a constitutional crisis/failure as you can imagine

Via: www.nbcnews.com/politics/tru...
The Office of Management and Budget sent a notification to Congress about their intent to use research and development funds to pay members of the military, two sources with direct knowledge tell NBC News.

A spokesperson for the OMB confirmed to NBC News that it plans to use the research and development funds and that there are two years' worth of funds available within the Department of Defense.

Think about how for decades, one of the ingredients of a crackpot was: retired engineer.

Retired engineers, for *generations* have been a fertile ground for crackpot theories in everything.

They get that golden watch and bam, incoherent manifesto about quantum archeology inbound.

People will scoff at virtue signaling and then wonder why today’s billionaires don’t build museums, libraries, hospitals, and universities like Gilded Age ones did.

that johnson is more terrified of seating a duly elected democrat who could force an epstein vote than having the entire government shut down really makes me wonder about that epstein vote tbh

they are clearly trying to terrify everyone out of showing up to the No Kings protest and I simply do not think it is going to work

see you all there

Sen. Roger Marshall: "October 18 is when the protest gets here. This will be a Soros paid-for protest for his professional protesters. The agitators show up. We'll have to get the National Guard out. Hopefully it will be peaceful. I doubt it."

Speaker Mike Johnson, standing next to Emmer here, urged Democrats less than a month ago to "turn down their rhetoric," saying, "Nazis and fascists is not helpful."

As such, striking to see him stand quietly as a fellow Republican insists there is a "terrorist wing" of the Democratic Party.

Emmer: "This is about one thing and one thing alone -- to score political points with the terrorist wing of their party, which is set to hold a hate America rally in DC next week."

one sort of interesting contradiction here is that a lot of this policy/political goal could be accomplished with progressive taxation on political spending specifically, and not caring if they spent the money on a yacht. But that runs into 1A issues, while just taking it away doesn’t.
twlldun.bsky.social
This is the correct take, by the way. Why I have come around to some form of a wealth tax is not because I fantasise that it can pay for the government programs I want (it won’t) or moral disgust at wealth (don’t care), but because of very rich people using their money to warp the body politic
opinionhaver.bsky.social
Lot of people confidently missing the point in the replies to this: if every cent of Elon musks net wealth was liquid, which it isn’t, that’s not even enough money to run the govt for two weeks. The problem less that they have money, and more how they use that money in destabilizing ways.

“The problem with billionaires isn’t that they’re hoarding money that would otherwise pay for a Scandinavian social utopia. It’s that their money has become a source of wildly distorted political power that allows a few men with extremist views to wreak havoc on the rest of us.”

This video is everywhere because it's a hilarious visual refutation of Portland being on fire. You can't get a mass movement going without convincing the masses

so yes, this does do something actually

News: Bari Weiss just sent a memo to staffers at CBS News asking them to produce a memo explaining "how you spend your working hours—and ideally, what you've made (or are making) that you're most proud of."

One CBS News staffer puts it like this to me: "We just got Elon Musked."

Euros have a long history of training here (and Canada for that matter) due to airspace restrictions at home (Germans did tactical training here for decades, separate from ENJJPT), same thing applies to Asian countries like Singapore and Taiwan, and getting US-quality training is a bonus
nied.bsky.social
Seeing a lot of folks being shocked by this but this is just a training agreement. Mountain Home is a major F-15 base & the Qatari air force just bought a bunch. This is pretty common, Norway & the UAE both have facilities in AZ for flight training.

Hegseth: "I'm also proud that today we're signing a letter of acceptance to build a Qatari Emeri air force facility at the Mountain Home Airbase in Idaho."

that Watchmen panel but in every single one the government of Argentina has caused a financial crisis.

I think this has happened six times in my lifetime.
prchovanec.bsky.social
The problem, in Argentina, was utterly predictable. Milei repeated the exact same mistake of the 1990s, stabilizing the peso by tying it to the dollar, without having the political capacity to reign in spending (driven by state governments) enough to make that sustainable.

I'm not sure they can ever break out of it. The idea that market forces are evil has become part of their national mythology.

It really doesn't help that prediction markets have taken off right at the same time that the US government has been in perpetual extreme stress, and more recently in a state of total crisis with no end in sight.

There's no one to crack down on insider trading, fraud, and market manipulation here.

The other day a student asked me about the prevalence of insider trading in prediction markets. I now have an answer.
