I saw another study premised on the idea that humans are monogamous...

Humans are not monogamous. That's a cultural assumption. Even saying humans are serially monogamous is premised on cultural notions common in the West. Some cultures are monogamous. Some aren't. Even within cultures it varies!

Please. He abducted himself. The dude he was attempting to kidnap tried to push him out of the car and then they drove him to a police station while on the phone with 911. How many kidnappers try to push their kidnapees out of the car, call 911, or drive to a police station? Very few I'd wager

Indiana’s Senate has voted AGAINST the GOP gerrymander that’d have locked in a 9-0 map.

This keeps the 7-2 map in place, saving two Democratic seats heading into 2026.

The vote failed big, 19/31.

The MAJORITY of the GOP senators opposed it!

TIL about a memorial ceremony in Iceland in 2019 to mark the end of a glacier, changing the place name from Okjökull to Ok (jökull = glacier). Uncompromising wording on the bronze plaque:
"This is to acknowledge that we know what is happening and what needs to be done. Only you know if we did it".

It's amazing how so fucking many institutions complied with fascism when pretty much every time someone goes "fuck you, make me" the government goes "oh no we made an oopsie, we didn't mean to say that, birthday boy did a lil poopsie oopsie"

To recap: Jeffrey Epstein offered a NY Times reporter photos taken in Epstein's kitchen of Donald Trump and girls in bikinis *and* implored the NYT reporter to put this information in the public discourse in 2015

What did the NY Times editors know about this offer?

Lots of comments correcting that it’s a stay for 48 hours — which I get — but it needs to be said: even 48 hours is devastating for some families. Eating isn’t something you can defer for a few days. The effects of hunger compound. Etc
This whiplash is absolute torture for hungry families. I shouldn’t be surprised SCOTUS would sink this low and allow Republicans to starve Americans, but here we are. I’m horrified and worried about Minnesotans — babies, seniors, people with disabilities — going hungry, getting sick, or dying.

Not to replace substance with message but I genuinely do not think that the GOP establishment is prepared, nor capable, of regulating itself in a world where all high profile democrats are directly staring into a camera and telling Trump to go fuck himself.

i want to repeat this: mamdani and spanberger have run similar campaigns tailored to their respective electorates and it is maddening to watch political journalists attempt to create some broad contrast where none exist
the other thing about this is that there is no reason to pit these candidates against each other? each are good fits for their respective electorates and each shows the value of vigorous campaigns focused on the stated material problems of voters.

My neighborhood Facebook group seems less overtly racist than NextDoor, but it's still wild. For example, one person was discussing something that was obviously an animal (all of some kind of plant was clipped close to the ground) but acted like it must be some malicious person.

Another ICE "assault" case unravels. Border Patrol and ICE are arresting US citizens and then after they find out that they are US citizens, they are charging them with "assault" to justify their actions. This is clearly DHS policy at this point. We've seen it repeatedly now.
