The common driver of outbreaks of COVID, seasonal flu, bird flu, measles, TB, RSV etc is that they are science problems (with medical implications), and medical decision-makers have little or no advanced science training (count the PhDs) - but have been taught they're too smart to need any.

OK this is ridiculous. The draft new Canadian public health guidance-development mechanism doubles down on excluding subject matter experts from voting roles, restricts membership to people from inside the EBM pseudoscience bubble, and sets up to funnel public money to McMaster-GRADE courses etc.

Covid is climbing again. It’s not a cold it can damage your heart amongst other organs. I see it equated to a cold and many think when they feel better it’s over. That’s not the case, the risks last years from any single infection but sadly there is no health messaging on this. 🧵
Worryingly, Covid infection levels in England have risen significantly in the last week. We are once again advising strict precautions against catching Covid in all but the lowest risk venues. (1/2)

She had been healthy and happy for most of her life, but repeated infections have clearly taken a toll on her health and wellbeing.

A lot of people are sick right now.

Flu and Covid are raging, but the good news is a well fitted respirator can prevent both!

A good mask like an N95 is very effective at stopping flu and Covid.

My article looks at how to choose one, how to fit test, where to buy & more.

Covid or flu can triple risk of heart attacks. Why is there so little emphasis on vaccines? Why are masks still not in healthcare? Why haven’t they rolled out the clean air? Why has nothing been learnt from the covid inquiry evidence. Why don’t they get new advisors!

We must learn hard lessons @ukcovid-19inquiry.bsky.social.
To protect people now and in the next pandemic, the UK should focus on core safeguards: correct use of high‑filtration face coverings in healthcare, crowded public settings, and during surges, clean indoor air, and access to trusted vaccine.
While aerosol and respiratory droplet transmission can be classified differently based on particle size & behaviour, they are closely related & often coexist. Understanding both is crucial for developing effective prevention strategies for airborne respiratory diseases.

UC San Diego researchers screened over 1.3 million compounds and discovered six SARS-CoV-2 helicase inhibitors, including MWAC-3429, which showed antiviral activity at 5.4 μM with no toxicity

A deep learning model boosted hit success rate from 7% to 28%

pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/...
Discovery of Tetrahydroisoquinoline-Based SARS-CoV-2 Helicase Inhibitors with Iterative, Deep Learning-Enhanced Virtual Screening
In this study, we pursued a structure-based drug discovery campaign targeting the SARS-CoV-2 helicase through three rounds of virtual screening (VS) enhanced with Artificial Intelligence (AI). The third round incorporated a deep neural network (DNN) in a virtual screening protocol to prioritize commercial molecules containing fragments related to previously identified hits. This model predicted binary activity toward the target and contributed to a 21% improvement in hit-identification efficiency compared with the previous approach, which used the same virtual screening protocol. In total, we have identified at least six hits with selectivity indexes (CC50/EC50) above three, which show promise in early stages of SARS-CoV-2 antiviral development. Additionally, a subfamily of 18 3-phenyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroisoquinoline (THIQ) derivatives was evaluated. The most potent compound identified in this series is MWAC-3429, which displayed cell-based antiviral activity (EC50 = 5.4 μM) with no observable cytotoxicity. The predicted binding site for this THIQ chemotype is located at the interface between the RecA1 and Stalk domains of Nsp13, where it appears to disrupt the 1B–RecA2 interdomain interactions, suggesting a novel allosteric inhibition mechanism, as supported by molecular dynamics simulations. Furthermore, five-membered ring substituents at the THIQ amino position were observed to enhance potency relative to their six-membered ring counterparts.
