Librarian, parent, knitter/spinner/crocheter, gamer, reader (especially romance and fantasy), occasional scribbler.
A bit of media my 5-year-old consumed recently had a throw-away gag of a character thinking they were fat, so this morning we got to have the "calories are good, actually; they give your body energy so you can play and grow" talk at the breakfast table.
Diet culture can fuck all the way off, kthx.

And because I didn't note this anywhere in my post or alt, this pattern is @woolandpine.bsky.social 's Bindle Hat, which is bringing me so much crafting joy.
I learned a new-to-me knitting technique for a hat pattern I was really excited for! Latvian braids!
It looks like columns of knitting, but I'm actually working it up and down and some cool twisting of the yarns as you use them creates the effect.

I've only recently started actually using my mini skein hoard.
1. Softly Spoken shawl with a six-mini set.
2 and 3. Two of Ambah O'Brien's ADVENT[word] patterns. Rainbow scarf is an Avatar-themed set and cool colors is a Night Sky theme set.

There is no shortcutting learning a skill, much as the AI tech bros would have you believe otherwise. Yeah, the part where you suck at something in the beginning is hard, but that's literally how you *learn*.

I stuck a "growth mindset" sticker on my spinning wheel just to remind me.
I'm old.

If you're not, listen to this.

Get a guitar or some drums, or a trumpet. Pick up a brush, a pencil, some clay or a welder.

Just make shit. It doesn't have to be good (eventually it will be) just make music, art or write or whatever.

It's literally never been more important.

In first-world woes, my electric tea kettle broke. I guess it is fortuitous timing that this is capitalist feeding frenzy weekend re: finding a replacement on sale?

I adore these books!
Buy my books they love Hallmark while making fun of it, they're queer+ socialist + they take place right now (well, not my problematic middle child, but we don't talk about Levi) and if you put them together on a shelf they make the bi pride flag!

Yup. I looked at bus routes for a job I was considering some time ago, and it was 20-30 minutes of driving, or an hour and a half each way.
I am super-pro-public transit, and use it way more than the average American, but I live near a light rail station with very, very stable and predictable scheduling, and even then I would not use it for many things I use a car for because the cost of transit is time.
i wonder how much of Americans' views on driving vs. transit would change if they had to pay for gas/insurance/etc every time they turned on the engine

"i'm not paying $5 to take the train to work twice a day when i can just drive" is a genuine opinion held by so many people

Just a friendly reminder as we go into the holidays:

Folks don't have to explain to you why they don't drink.

If you offer them a drink and they decline, don't ask them why. It's not your business.

Just offer them something without alcohol to drink instead. And move on.

Ooh. Gonna give this one a listen.
Loving this playlist today. It isn't super Christmas heavy, but it's very wintery, which I like.

Aha! This is it, my 2026 calendar!

The last few years, I've been buying my wall calendar directly from artists, and it's so fun.
A little about the mushroom project 🍄

These paintings were made over the last 2 years and I've painted over 100 little mushrooms over that time. The 12 I picked for this calendar are ones I felt particularly connected to and fit the vibe of the month.

Ooh this looks very relevant to my interests 👀
Head on over and support this Canadian small press by clicking "NOTIFY ME ON LAUNCH" (right hand side of the pretty mushrooms). It won't be launching until 2026, but it helps ye ol' algorithm to smash the button.

Might have to give this a listen!
Since we’re talking BUNNICULA I need everyone to know that the audiobook is read by Victor Garber and he truly out-gays himself. Harold and Chester absolutely come across as the fussy middle-aged couple they were obviously meant to be.
If you see this, post a vampire that isn’t Dracula.

"What if one of YOUR favorite politicians/celebrities/etc is on the list?" Did you all not notice how quickly we dropped Neil Gaiman when we found out about the things he did? Do you know how beloved that guy used to be and how loathed he is now? I think that right there should answer your question.
