A research team has found multiple lineages of archaea that have fully repurposed the TAG stop codon to encode the noncanonical amino acid pyrrolysine. cen.acs.org/biological-c... #chemsky 🧪
These archaea built a distinct genetic code to put pyrrolysine in proteins

Despite the tidy maps found in textbooks, metabolism is still full of unresolved mysteries. Few people are better at uncovering these overlooked but essential puzzles than Antoine Danchin. Here here an analysis of the intriguing guanidine enviromicro-journals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/...
Metabolic Origin, Role and Fate of the Denaturant Guanidine
The origin of metabolic guanidine is largely a mystery. We suggest it is created when guanine-containing nucleotides are oxidised by molecular oxygen instead of being broken down into urea as purines....

Exciting publication on plastid ribose transport in plants, including discoveries in Arabidopsis but also in important legume crops (soy and common bean), with implications for nodule symbiosis.

Interesting to see that a glucose transporter has a dual role in ribose salvage.

It would be great if researchers would work more on crops than Arabidopsis for a start…
Then field trials will automatically become more common (if legislation permits for GM!).
