His Tory politics are not mine but I often agree with him and his achievements outside of politics are notable. Imagine pretty much anyone in the current crop across parties building up a major publishing house or having the imagination, & inquiring vision & passion to plant an arboretum.

I mean, there were some teachers in the 70s/early 80s who thought that kids going around spewing out racist bile and writing "NF" on blackboards had extreme right prejudices.

Yep, about time someone got them in line.

Pretty sure there's a plaque (or some commemoration) in the Castleton Losehill YHA to Friedrich Engels who purportedly stayed there? Well before YHA status but presumably he would approve of its current accessibility to the masses.
More regular visitors than me may be able to confirm this.

Shrewsbury Society of Architects at The Hive.

They're doing a series on Irish Architects. This was the second of three. Last month was Shane de Blacam who worked with/for Louis Kahn

Working predominantly in Ireland, De Blacam’s buildings are characterised by their simplicity and their celebration of local materials.

Hah! I had just worked it out based on the post bemoaning the state of Birmingham's planning department combined with the DnD reference in the bio!
Went to an amazing lecture last night by Yvonne Farrell of Grafton Architects. Proud to have lived to see the triumph of critical regionalism!

Yes very much so. I think back in the 1950s it seemed appropriate as green harked back to that pastoral idyll rather than the modern sense of environmental consciousness.

It's early days & there is of course a lot of local resistance but this will see development happening over the next couple of years.

Labour's significant introduction of 'grey belt' goes a long way to release land in the green belt for development where there is an unmet need (primarily for housing), it is a location with good access to services it's in the context of other developments and doesn't cause merging of towns.
hugeaction.bsky.social
A fundamental issue is that 'green belt' is a poor description as it is a spatial rather than environmental planning policy.
It is fundamentally a development exclusion zone where all new development is inappropriate save for a limited number of exceptions including redevelopment of brownfield land.

The expulsion of England’s Jews began #OnThisDay 735 years ago

The first year of Edward I’s reign saw waves of strictures placed on a Jewish community in an already perilous situation.

Trump is now calling for the arrest of elected representatives checking his power.

What else is left on the path to full-blown authoritarianism?

I have a cartoon in the current Private Eye
Cartoon. Two people standing on a stage looking at a third person who is jumping down through a trap door. In the foreground we see the backs of the audience’s heads. One standing people observes “It’s just a stage he’s going through”

"15 years ago, Polish workers came here to find opportunity. Now Poland is growing twice as fast as we are," says Kemi Badenoch.

Any ideas what may have happened in the interim?

In the current climate of far right hostility, Jenrick is actively inciting violence against these judges with this. Badenoch may have defended his explicit racism yesterday, but this alone should see him lose both his position as shadow justice secretary and the whip immediately.

The Rees Moggs will still do History degrees. The Johnsons will still do Classics.
Sadly, the Wilsons from South Bank in Middlesbrough won't get the intellectual stimulation of studying a subject of interest for a degree.

Jenrick being the loudest member of the Conservative party has already been a huge contributor to the poisoning of our politics. We really don't need any four-dimensional chess about him becoming leader. When it happens, it will be a terrible day for our country.
paulbernal.bsky.social
A Tory party under Jenrick might take a few of the racist votes from Reform, but they’d haemorrhage bucketloads to the Lib Dems.

So, on balance…
