Today, I convened a group of former military generals and veterans to hear perspectives on deploying troops in American cities.

Their commitment is to our nation. That’s why they’re speaking out against what the President's doing as uncalled-for, unprecedented, and un-American.

“This is the best ‘hate America’ rally that I’ve ever been to.”

As Thom Hartmann wrote in his piece today, we need to take these protests & turn it into actionable think tanks to dtmne policies & get our narrative out. We need leaders. We have to start w local precincts. Repukes have been doing this for 50 yrs. We have a lot of catching up.

In our city of 270,000, MSA 750,000, I did not see ONE SINGLE POLICEMAN. In the past, they've always been visible. Our #NoKings crowd was estimated to be 5,000.

It was much bigger. At the Ohio State House, the lawn (literally, the grassy area) was completely full of people.

April 5th trickled onto the lawn, but the majority was unused.

The sidewalks were full at both, with this one wrapping around the corner blocks this time.

Observationally larger

" 55% attended No Kings 1 ". I find this very interesting. I would have guessed this to be closer to 90%. Either there was a huge drop off of people attending Kings 1 (which doesn't make any sense), or the crowd was MUCH bigger than Kings1.

It's more than that. The organizers seem to be largely white women and intentionally or unintentionally that's who the communications organizing the protests reach. While the organizers reach out to other groups for speakers, calls to attend seem to primarily be reaching white women.

Probably a change in the demographics of the growing protests. I doubt many of the violent responders have changed tact, but rather more sane people have joined the ranks.

I think young people are beyond angry but also extremely disillusioned. They will need commitment for real structural reforms to get off the bench.

A lot of young people took a stand over the past two years and faced police violence and bipartisan condemnation for opposing a genocide abetted by the US.

I asked our 16 year old if she wanted to come with us and she gladly agreed! She ran into some friends while we were out and she saw on social media that some more were down there. She’s been pretty political this year but I was still pleasantly surprised she was willing to protest with her parents

(And like no shade to our older members!! They’re doing amazing work! I’m just frustrated that no matter how much we try to meet them where they are with opportunities, the young folks are MIA. At 38, I should not be the youngest canvasser, AND YET!)

I’m experiencing this as I’m organizing canvasses and phone banks for prop50 in California. While there’s a couple of us under 40, we wouldn’t be knocking even 1/10 as many doors without the 55+ group. While I know millennials/Z are overworked and underpaid, it’s extremely disheartening.

If you’re 22, the last 9 years of your life have been Trump & Covid, Biden & Gaza & now Trump again. It’s unsurprising that the youth are now disaffected.

Cool but we cannot let these centrists and right wingers take the narrative. We’ve done the centrist’s thing and they lost to Trump twice. They can join but the have to shut up and sit in the back. It’s time for the left to lead.
