I just read MAEVE MULVANEY HAS HAD ENOUGH by @kellyamangan.bsky.social and it's a strong recommend. All the characters are nuanced and well observed, but I want to particularly single out the MC's relationship with her parents. It's very hard to get a realistic parent-child relationship in MG...

I got a little pushback on this, so let me unpack it a bit: 1) If you are relying on ChatGPT to do research for you, you either don't know how to do research yourself, or don't understand the limitations of AI, or both. (Authors have to do A LOT of research. IF you don't know how, that's not great.)

At least with LYRIC MCKERRIGAN, SECRET LIBRARIAN, the key was that I didn't think of it as a political book. I was just writing a superhero story. So it made sense for my protagonist to use two things that I think are powerful weapons for good: libraries and unions.
The problem with a lot of leftist books for kids is that they feel more written for the parents than the kids. (I guess this is true for most political kids books.) Like, you can have a great message but the book still has to be, y’know, good.
