STATEMENT REGARDING DETENTION OF STANDING ROCK SIOUX TRIBE MEMBER IN MINNESOTA JANUARY 24, 2026 I was notified today, January 24, 2026, that a Standing Rock Sioux Tribe member has been detained by the U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in the state of Minnesota. Tribal leadership is actively working to locate the individual, gather accurate information, and coordinate with the appropriate authorities to secure their release. At this time, details surrounding the detention remain limited. I urge the public to refrain from spreading unverified information while this matter is being reviewed. Standing Rock Sioux Tribe will continue to advocate for the protection of our citizen's rights and will provide updates as appropriate.

The Anti-Performative ICE Resistance Guide (what actually helps) Protect those being persecuted, from yourself Well-meaning people can cause real harm. Don't: share raid rumors without verification, post locations, schedules, or identifying details, pressure undocumented people to "tell their story" Do: ask: does this increase their risk?, default to privacy over visibility Show up offline Material ways to assist: Court accompaniment (quiet presence, documentation), childcare or rides for families attending hearings, translation support (if fluent). Mutual aid coordination through existing networks. Fund the work ICE Enforcement succeeds, in part, because people can't afford lawyers. So: Set up recurring monthly donations (even $10-$25) to trusted orgs like: RAICES, National Immigration Project, Immigration Defense Project, Legal Aid Justice Center, Amica, local immigrant bond funds (these matter most), and many more. Prioritize legal defense and bond funds. If your help disappears when the news cycle does, it's not helping as much as it could.

I think a lot of us get hope wrong. Hope, I do not believe, is an emotion. In fact, hope makes space for lots of emotions to exist alongside it. You can DO hope scared, angry, sad etc...

Hope doesn't find us. We make hope through action and struggle. It's a practice of living and is re-made daily.

One thing that irks me: people keep calling the folks on the streets in Minneapolis protestors. They are not generally there to protest, they are there to observe and document. This is the product of organizing and mutual aid. It is telling that these acts of citizenship are seen as protest!
