"As agents tear gas crowds, chase people down streets and raid homes, local journalists are left scrambling to cover a wide-ranging operation that affects their own communities. It is relentless work.."

Good piece on how local journalists covering ICE in Chicago:

My man, the stated policy of your administration is that Canada should become an American state, but Canadians running an accurate ad is a threat to American sovereignty?
Bessent: "I've read that Ontario is spending up to $75 million on these advertisements and it's propaganda coming across our border to decry the tariffs. The premiere of Ontario seems to have come off the rails a little ... this is interference in US sovereign matters."
Verity Unseen would make an excellent name for a Thomas Pynchon character.

This is the sort of thing that occurs to you if you’ve been reading Gravity’s Rainbow on Saturday evening and singing Humbly I Adore Thee on Sunday morning. ⚓️
The Republican Party now believes that reminding people what previous Republican presidents have said is a psychological operation against the American people.
WELKER: Why is the president setting trade policy based on a TV ad he doesn't like?

BESSENT: This is a kind of propaganda against US citizens. It's psyops

our purely arbitrary betrayal of Canada is one of the things which makes me angriest about Trump II

The people doing this deserve to live every minute of the rest of their lives in misery.
A friend of mine in Chicago just shared a video on IG of an ICE operation near her house. The operation happened just minutes before the neighborhood Halloween parade. ICE used tear gas and multiple parents had to wash their kids' (including toddlers) eyes out.

In a nearly illiterate editorial, WaPo defends Trump's ballroom project, without revealing the fact that the paper's owner, Jeff Bezos, is a principal funder of the project. Shameful conduct all around. bsky.app/profile/bgru...
Here’s a free link to a house editorial that illustrates the collapse of the new Washpost Opinion page.

It’s important to read it, because it is so poorly written and reasoned, and it shows how quickly an editorial institution can fall completely apart under spineless leadership.

They send armed goons to kidnap parents in front of their children and then get mad that we don’t thank them for “keeping us safe.”

Hell isn’t hot enough for these assholes.
A Naperville man was hauled away by federal immigration agents Thursday morning as his two sons watched, the older boy begging them not to hurt his father and tearfully asking for a chance to speak to him before they left.

Loved listening to the Canadian national anthem back when I covered the NHL. Such a stirring song. #WorldSeries

Wait until he hears that Reagan didn't trust the Russians.
A definitive thread about both Reagan and tariffs, and the fact that the modern Republican party now exists entirely to do Donald Trump’s will.
The bottom line, and what I'm getting at, is that the price of admission to the Republican Party today is lying in the service of the dictator, like something out of Orwell's 1984; in this case, lying about the past.

Here's the rest of the doc for those who are interested.

Ah.

“Mellon, the 77-year-old … who poured $30 million into 3 GOP super PACs in 5 months, wrote that black people were ‘even more belligerent’ after the expansion of social programs in the 1960s and 1970s and that Americans who rely on government assistance were ‘slaves of a new Master, Uncle Sam.’”

“.. perhaps the most cruel and unlawful offense the Trump administration has perpetrated yet — freezing funding already enacted into law to feed hungry Americans while he shovels tens of billions of dollars .. to Argentina and into his ballroom.”

These guys get $50k signing bonuses.

Stephen Miller is telling them they have immunity and encouraging them to create chaos.

They get almost no training, many couldn’t pass an open book exam & they’re allowed to hide their faces.

They’re swinging assault rifles around in public.

Abolish ICE

Just for the record, in 2020:
- Wray was the FBI director Trump handpicked to replace Comey
- Jack Smith was in the Hague prosecuting Kosovo war crimes
- Garland was an appeals court judge
- Monaco was in private practice in LA

There was no Biden administration yet, crooked or otherwise.

He crazy.

the discourse about class politics in america is not actually about class politics; it’s about gender, and more specifically, it’s about what to do with the large chunk of (mostly male) voters who are low-education, low-status, and low-trust.
Right? Baseball and grand tour cycling are my exceptions.
Seeing the Blue Jays in the post season always brings back memories of covering their 1985 ALCS series against the Royals. Exhibition Stadium had never seen so many reporters, and they built a tall, temporary press box down the left field line that swaaayed in the winds off Lake Ontario.
Boy, having the in-game parlays on screen while Shohei Otani takes his warm-up cuts sure seems like a good way of communicating that you don’t give a damn about the integrity of the game, given what happened with Otani‘s translator. #worldseries
I moved to New York in 1979, and stayed for a while in a seedy hotel right off Times Square. I was 22, all alone, and all I could see out my window was a billboard saying, “In space, no one can hear you scream.” Now I know who I have to thank for that. RIP Barbara Gips.

She came up with “In space no one can hear you scream” while washing dishes, and it was used on the film's poster co-designed by her husband.
