There was only one joke in BOB all of us who worked in comics agreed was hilarious: the running gag that this brilliant European artist they all loved had agreed to do a cover for their comic, and every ep they had high hopes of getting it, and the guy never tuned in anything.

There was also one centered on a comic company, BOB (1992) starring Bob Newhart, but after the first ep it barely leveraged the comics industry setting and mostly fell into standard sitcom plots.

Which was a big disappointment to us who knew how insane the actual industry was, and is.

They should have just hired a bunch of comics writers to do rough plotlines for the show.

And it had so much potential! He was a Silver Age artist who’d been reduced to working for a greeting card company — the well-known rock bottom for artists, the job Robert Crumb escaped — and he’d moved into ersatz Image.

They should have just talked to Ty Templeton and made his stories into eps!

George was just trying to get to work.

ICE pepper-sprayed him, dragged him from his car, locked him in a detention center, and placed him on suicide watch. He even missed his young daughter’s birthday in the process.
