These two stories are somehow connected. Apparently, if you lobby tirelessly for more pollution & ecological wreckage, that’s exactly what you get.

This is now out in front of @theverge.com paywall for 24 hours (cool experiment!).

Please do give it a read: it’s the story of how the White House is leading a global crackdown on news outlets and disinfo research.
Delighted this piece is now live on @theverge.com: I've spent months investigating how a supposed war against the "censorship-industrial complex" has been used by the US right to wage war against misinformation research – and free speech itself – across the world. Please do give it a read.

i never ever endorse reading a thread - but you should read this thread.
Coffee thoughts:

Ireland is a polity where you can go and visit a Minister in a constituency office on a weekend to ask for help filling in a form.

The distance to/from officeholders is effectively zero.

But the distance for most people from *power* can be (invisible to them) huge.

"If we aren't already"
I hope people understand that if Trump gets his way America will soon be part of the global axis of evil if we aren't already. You see it in the Caribbean, you see it in Ukraine, and you see it with Trump trying to buddy up to Xi. We are a malevolent force.

My new years resolutions

1. To not, under any circumstances, use AI.
2. To find a little hut in a forest where I can disappear to, just in case.

Young girls and women are groomed for marriage in a way boys just are not. So. This week, I took note of ads that featured weddings. And noted if there was a groom in any of them*

*spoiler. There wasn't.

One of the many reasons AI can't produce good writing is it can't hate its own writing. It can't think to itself "Maybe I'm illiterate" during the writing process. And that's essential

Will Arnett was on Conan and told a story about how Conan dealt with the death of his parents by accusing Jason Bateman of killing them. It’s so funny.

And call you a fraudster while doing it.
This is f*cking disgusting

Also: make the exact same season over and over and over. Same end, same start each time. Make a show based on nostalgia, then turn the show into nostalgia for itself. An ouroboros of content. Until it runs out of flesh to self cannibalise and it dies
My semi-serious theory is that "Stranger Things" was designed to be a Test Show for the streaming model. You pinpoint the exact nostalgia point for your consumer base. Slow the pace down so that they could be doing multiple things at the same time as they watch. Long episode lengths pad the numbers.
