all these people have to get what's coming to them. none can be allowed any voice or role back in society. ever. at this point even a truth & reconciliation commission is a moderate position

There are reports that the *entire* office of special education at the US Dept of Education has been cut. These hardworking folks ensure kids with disabilities get equal access to a quality education.

America’s children deserve better than this.

I’m pretty proud of the size of the Modessitt shelf. At one point that was probably at least twice as big, but somewhere along the line I decided if I needed my fix, I could get it without a big series. Parafaith War is the book that got me hooked, and Forever Hero is my usual goto

As you can probably tell from the quality, I fell in love with A Book Dragon a very long time ago. I really love the mechanic of a dragon shrinking himself and also hibernating - it’s a really charming story.

Ok, I’m sure some more books will pop up and need to be slipped in, but SFF is shelved, other than all the Tolkien stuff I need to sort out. Recognize anything?
Two bookshelves fully stacked. A few are facing out including Vajra's Saint of Bright Doors and Ken Liu's Grace of Kings. Generally alphabetical by author, but Robert Jordan and Steven Erikson's series are on bottom shelves on one side, and anthologies of various sorts are the bottom of the other.

“Dark Matter” and “Long Hidden” are the anthologies that I credit with getting me from “grab the latest big Tolkien-imitator off the shelf” to exploring what SFF could do, and engaging with the broader online community.

I mean I’m at the part where I’m unpacking and that is pretty fun.

They are in the process of switching from reading via audiobooks to reading paper books, and in general will not take my recommendations for books, with special exceptions made for you and Alix Harrow.

A thing about unpacking all my books is realizing that I have two copies of both Furious Heaven AND Unconquerable Sun by @kateelliottsff.bsky.social (although since middle kid heard “genderbent history retelling” and said “gimme” this may be a good thing).

Yes, peeps, it is me again because $2.99 is a STEAL for the ebook (w/ bk 2 next month, no less!)

Writing The Witch Roads in 2022 reignited my love of writing after a rough period when I thought I should just quit. All else aside, this book is about finding joy in the small graces of the world

Wondering if I should shelve Principia with our various student textbooks …
A box of books, with a few pulled out. Visible covers include Newton's Principia (vol 1), Darwin's Origin of the species, CLR James' Beyond a Boundary, and Kieran Healey and Marion Fourcade's The Ordinal Society

Always happy to carry an Electra Pritchett review - you can rely on her for incisive genre analysis worn enviably lightly.

Case in point, here she is on The Witch Roads by Kate Elliott (@tordotcom.bsky.social): "If epic fantasy is about scale, then Elliott has written the best I’ve read in years."
The Witch Roads by Kate Elliott
The Witch Roads may be Elliott's most concise and economical book yet.

Here’s the good part of the next few day(s)
A room full of piles of books, with built in shelves in the background.

Note also that “does the fact that I have Tasso’s own analysis of his own historical poem and is that Lit Crit or goes with Tasso” is also a live question.
jsuttonmorse.me
Broadly I am inclined to SFF/other fiction/Poetry (because actually I have kinda a lot)/history/lit crit/other nonfiction (with maybe some special interests), but we’ll see. There’s always the temptation to spotlight special interests and rabbit holes.

The great shelving begins, and along with it the eternal question: is “Jerusalem Delivered” poetry, history (if the crusades) or a historical document that goes with the date of publication? (Corollary: where to put The Silmarillion, Lit Crit focused on Tolkien, and Tolkien’s Monsters and Critics?)

[email protected] on reading long and short books critically: "You can have breadth and have that work really well. You can have depth and have that work really well. It's not like there's one direction

"I think it’s really when the novel feels dissatisfying based on what it’s trying to do."

📣 NEW CRITICAL FRIENDS!

In a new ep of the @strangehorizons.bsky.social SFF criticism podcast, I talk with @redfernjon.bsky.social and Nileena Sunil about books that might be longer, and others that could be shorter.

How to read a text that offers too little, or too much, stuff? Some ideas.

Dan Hartland is joined by Redfern Jon Barrett and Nileena Sunil to discuss those novels that feel too sure or not long enough: what's behind that feeling we have that a text is lacking something, o…

It’s dark. Sam asks for a tale. Strider tells of Tinúviel: ‘It is a fair tale, though it is sad, as are all the tales of Middle-earth.

‘The leaves were long, the grass was green,
The hemlock-umbels tall and fair,
And in the glade a light was seen
Of stars in shadow shimmering…’

A real honor to nearly bookend (with a late cameo following earlier more substantive appearances!) this amazing series. The depth and breadth of Matt's work here is truly awe inspiring. (And good morning to my brother in late-alphabetical sorting, Yanis Varoufakis.)
