Yes, I recall that now. Thanks for the correction. I’m remembering all the post Ellis Island records, and as I said, Granddad’s recollection is he got off the boat with a u, came out of Ellis Island with an i, and there was nothing he did to cause that. 🙂

So either 125 year old documents were fabricated and Granddad was lying, or there was a case of misspelling. I’d say the latter is a far more simple explanation, wouldn’t you? 2/2

You have looked at records from Ellis Island, right? (I have.) Did they just make those up later? The records also track with my granddad’s memory. He said he came into Ellis Island with (name spelled with u) and came out with (name spelled with i). 1/2

No reason for Granddad to change a u to an i in the middle of a one syllable name. His first language was Yiddish, so he would likely have pronounced the u umlauted, making it sound like i. Or u and i are next to each other on the keyboard, but I don’t know if they were using typewriters at Ellis.

I was told the same thing by a docent at the National Museum of American Jewish History. Except I have documentation - ship manifest with one last name, Ellis Island record with our current family name that differs by one letter. The misspelling could easily be and likely was mis-hearing.
