Panel 1: In december the under 16 ban went into affect Discord mandated age verification. Between Face-scan and providing a photo ID, I thought I was safe with a scan Panel 2: My account was insta-suspended in under a minute, I am over 30 years old and it identified me as under 13 Panel 3: Discord gave me an ultimatum: give them a photo of me holding my ID or never use my account again Panel 4: I tried arguing I feared for my privacy; they have leaked ID before, I tried arguing I'VE BEEN PAYING THEM FOR 8 YEARS. They didn't listen Panel 5: I couldn't talk to most of my overseas friends for a month Panel 6: Looking for advice online: Turns out victims of the UK/AUS ban had it better than the norm; at least a person saw my complaints. Most suspension tickets are auto declined by bots; I cannot envision Discord scaling this for worldwide fairly Panel 7: I eventually complied, I'm pretty luck; I could get away with an expired license Panel 8: Currently discord is being hammered by people cancelling nitro subscriptions, I'd cancel mine if they hadn't had done it for me already Panel 9: my advice is this: Ensure Discord isn't your only point of contact with your friends

It occurs to me that many people don't know about the GameFan coffee incident.

In 1993, GameFan published a manic 6-page review of the game Cybermorph that was written while tripping on LSD that somebody put in the office coffee pot

The review declared that Cybermorph was the first "real" game
"... where, anytime, and interact with crafts and characters all over each of fifty planets, for as long as I wanted After rescuing my allotment of pods I can survey the world, taking out remaining enemies, playing with different viewpoints and examining structures. Each level is a different type of rescue mission requiring a completely new strategy than the last. Some moons are totally hostile while others require intense exploration and passive gameplay. I played for 3 hours to complete the first eight moons, then suprisingly met a boss on the ninth. At that point (I'm used to 16 bit games) I figured it was over. But I was wrong. Eight more appeared that required massive study to conquer. Then, after another twelve hours of engulfing gameplay, I reached the end once again, fought two huge gunships and figured, for sure, that was it. Again, I was wrong. Eight more planets appeared that I am still, two days later, studying."

i think it sucks that online spaces really dont have safe spaces for kids. BUT we need more public spaces for children, especially ones that dont cost money

children deserve offline spaces and community
