replacing books with AI is like replacing your photo album with an AI trained on it.

the value of a book is more than its contents; it’s how you process it too. when you offload that to AI, you relinquish one of the greatest benefits of reading: getting inspired by every sentence coming your way.

Really shows how hollow conservative patriotism and “grit” have become. Similarly in Europe, much of the far right would likely roll out a red carpet for invading Russians.

i have been reading Tom Ricks’ “Fighting the Good War” which is a military analysis of the civil rights movement, and one thing that comes abundantly across is that movement leaders and ordinary people made it a practice to refuse to fall into despair and cynicism.

Absolutely insane that the GOP is allowing trump to continue terrorizing allies to the point this is happening.
BREAKING: A full-scale airlift is running around the clock, transporting troops and military equipment to Greenland.
The operation is extensive, “beyond anything we’ve tried before,” a source tells DR. Danish F-35 fighter planes and warships from European allies involved.

The DOJ is no longer legitimate on any level. It’s just a goon squad. This has enormous implications for the country long after Trump is gone.
Breaking: MS NOW confirms:

The Trump Justice Department has launched criminal investigations into Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey.

ICE has kidnapped so many people from their cars that the city had to put out this statement. Let that sink in.
Vehicles that are abandoned due to an ICE detention and towed to the City's impound lot will be released to their owners or a representative at no cost.

Let’s call this what it is: a disgusting abuse of power and a farce.

As his agents terrorize Minnesotans, as prices rise, as he fails to deliver for Americans, he is also weaponizing the DOJ against his perceived enemies.

This is not a banana republic and justice will prevail.

Two days ago it was Elissa Slotkin. Last week it was Jerome Powell. Before that, Mark Kelly. Weaponizing the justice system against your opponents is an authoritarian tactic.

The only person not being investigated for the shooting of Renee Good is the federal agent who shot her.
Breaking news: The Justice Department has issued subpoenas for Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey as part of an investigation alleging that they are impeding federal law enforcement officers’ abilities to do their jobs in the state.

Federal agents’ use of chemical weapons has hurt children at immigration raids, while walking down their block, and in their schools.

This includes a 6-month-old, whose mother was forced to perform CPR on him after being exposed to ICE's tear gas.

For centuries, a “gossip” was a woman who attended another woman's delivery. The word was a corruption of “god-sib” or “god-sibling,” meaning “sister in the Lord.” The gossips offered support to mother & midwife. Only later did it become derogatory.

NEW: I spoke with this bishop, who offered more context for his (entirely unprepared!) remarks.

Turns out other bishops (e.g., in MN) agree with him, and he recalled the moment he told local priests to get their wills in order.

Even if DOGE did not cut spending, it did eliminate a lot of federal jobs and grants.
How is this possible?
Federal personnel spending represents only about 5-6% of fed spending, so you can cut a lot of people - and capacity - without saving much. donmoynihan.substack.com/p/a-year-on-...

But did we at least avoid dismantling core functions of the government when we let DOGE run amok? No.

But did we avoid committing mass murder by destroying USAID? Also no.

But did we at least avoid violating all the laws & the constitution by letting DOGE criminals run amok? Alas, also no.
New, from me: A year in, did DOGE deliver on its promises?

Not the promises it made to us (cut spending, modernize government, improve services). It worsened state capacity.

But it was part of a successful broligarchy exercise in state capture. 🧵

He then left the dissolved solution on his shelf and fled to Sweden.

(After the war he un-dissolved the gold and the prizes were re-cast.)
