Whenever I've watched REDS, there's a part of me that feels it's insane it even exists. Like it should be one of those unrealized projects people say, "Man, wouldn't it have been awesome if that had happened?"

There are so many Diane Keaton performances to remember, but a lot of people haven't seen Reds, and A) my God, see it, it is a masterpiece and B) her performance as Louise Bryant is one of the bravest, toughest, least sympathy-courting pieces of work by an American actress in the last 50 years.

Le Creuset is Cheugy 👎
NY Mag instagram post showing a headline “Le Creuset is Cheugy” and then below that “Why does a collection of $400 pots suddenly look so cheap?” with a big thumbs down in the foreground and lots of ceramic pots in the background

"You let him go for some words on paper?"

"But it's a story by a famous guy, Tone. He wrote ON THE ROAD."

"I don't give a fuck where he wrote, I want my money."

Anyone have a trustworthy list of organization to donate to support the fight against ICE raids?

My wife and I send our deepest sympathies. We never met Sandwiches, but she brought us great joy.

Except the "dated genre fiction" parts makes it a little too *off* - its weird without quite embracing the weirdness. And the parts that are *on* are not strong enough to really engage. The supporting cast, meanwhile, is stacked, but the leads are duds. Recast them and it works much better.

There are historical aspects I was curious about. Taking dated genre fiction on its own terms, examining how an era's genre fiction captures that era, what do you do about the whole Confederate soldier thing, etc. The film offers some of that, but mostly it just wants to be an old timey adventure.

With my Disney+ subscription about to lapse, I finally got around to watching JOHN CARTER, a film I've long been curious about. And like I expected, it is *interesting* and bad. It's funny to see the Wikipedia page blame its commercial failure on marketing, and sure, but also it's just bad.

The highlight of the last film for me was bringing back the classic tracks with those nice new stings.

One way PTA achieves this is the shagginess. He can take digressions or stay in moments, widening the scope rather than lasering on narrative, because he can make these digressions compelling. So it's a long film that doesn't *feel* long. (Something he shares with Scorsese.)
