Barbarism is the natural state of mankind. Civilization is unnatural. It is a whim of circumstance. And barbarism must always ultimately triumph.

@caranotkara.bsky.social it seems that your local MP is cut from the same stone as Joanna. Is this an isolated experience, or part of a pattern?

Pope Leo quotes Hannah Arendt:

“The ideal subject of totalitarian rule is not the convinced Nazi or the convinced Communist, but people for whom the distinction between fact and fiction and the distinction between true and false no longer exist."

Analysis in @thetimes.com by @leaskyd.bsky.social & Anna Dowell of the sharp decline in British identity uncovered by the Scottish Social Attitudes survey.

With comment from Sir John Curtice on the polarising of Scottish politics and from myself on the decoupling of Scottish and British identities:

The National Broadcaster is essentially English, like the London Parliament. Scotland has a devolved Parliament (debate). Maybe a devolved Scottish Broadcaster would work, run by Scots, for the Scots. It's hard to reconcile current output with the consistently expressed political views of electorate

Ad hominem attacks don't persuade the target to change their view. They have a different purpose, and this is Glinner's weapon of choice.

For most of my life, I've experienced & observed common decency across the political spectrum and through my daily interactions. Now, it's dog-eat-dog ad hominem attacks on people - always minorities. Language matters, it's how people come to be indifferent to their neighbours, & worse - much worse

I've no idea what this means, other than it's unrelated to my post regarding the meaning and impact of words. Warren Mitchell's explanation is clear.

Rousseau redefines freedom as resisting unwanted actions. True liberty lies in aligning choices with personal values, fostering autonomy through deliberate restraint and authentic living.
I have never believed that man’s freedom consisted in doing what he wants, but rather in never doing what he does not want to do.

Homophobia 🤝 transphobia

Growing up in the 70s, 80s, & 90s we heard the exact same stuff - word for word - being said about gays and lesbians.
