1/5 This is something I said on a Discord server, but that I wanna put somewhere more visible.

We've been subjected to barrages of bad news after bad news after bad news, and this isnt even something recent. We've been on a constant barrage of horrible news with barely anything positive since 2020.

Rough vibes on this website today, likely because people feel Hopeless and Helpless Because Can't Stop It and No One Who Is Supposed To Is Trying To So Now We're Fighting Each Other™. I recommend activities such as book, or potentially instrument if you like instrument, or even do talk on phone.

Personally I just really love reading.

But I also adore libraries so go to your library this new year. They have all the books, you can request books and they nearly all have a online service for e books these days. #Libraries2026

Really going to utilize #booksky more. Yes, some of it will be for personal reasons, but its just a cool part of the internet. One that makes me happy.

Read more books. Write more books.

Books.

Every year, on New Year’s Eve, I pick a poem to carry with me into the new year. It’s a way for me to set some intention on what I want this new year to be. This year, my poem for the new year is Joy Harjo’s “For Calling the Spirit Back from Wandering the Earth in Its Human Feet.” Here’s to 2026.

do me a favor. take two minutes (or less!) out of your scrolling time to tell a writer whose work you love how you feel. trust me, it's something a writer wants to hear. and not something you should wait to share. just pick a person whose work you read. tell them how they've touched you

I wish we could explain to small children that some day, getting in bed and going to sleep will become the highlight of their lives.

Our Xmas movie tonight was WHILE YOU WERE SLEEPING (seen it b4). Thoughts:
-Frighteningly plausible. We’ve seen so many folks tell white lies that explode out of control.
-Sandra Bullock at the height of her powers.
-Is Bill Pullman actually attractive?
-Lit better than every Netflix original series

As many of us begin Christmas meal prep, allow me to share the advice that my ER nurse sister puts in the chat every year:

A dropped knife has no handle. Jump away. Let it fall. You can pick it up and wash it.

I keep thinking about that Ray Bradbury quote?

"We are all cups, constantly and quietly being filled. The trick is, knowing how to tip ourselves over and let the beautiful stuff out."

And how what so many of us are being filled with is darkness and horror.

New report maps a “severe” shortage of local journalists in the U.S.
The report from Rebuild Local News and Muck Rack finds that more than 1,000 counties — one out of three in the nation — do not have the equivalent of even one full-time local journalist.

As more journalists are driven out of their jobs, I keep hearing this drumbeat of "it's ok -- they can start their own newsletter or publication." Some can. But becoming your own business is a huge job, and will eliminate many talented reporters from the public sphere. Here's why. (1/5)

Also to make an em dash all you have to do is put two dashes in a row in Word, and the program makes it for you. Wordpress too.

Anything an LLM is doing is stolen from actual writers and I'll be damned if I'll let a plagiarism machine dictate how I use language, grammar or punctuation.
Stop spreading this garbage about em dashes in ACTUAL EDITED PROSE OH MY GOD.

Plenty of actual human beings know how to type em dashes! We’re called “writers” and “editors” — maybe you’ve heard of us?

I kept hoping this myth would burn itself out, but no — the idea that em dashes are a sign of AI writing just keeps spreading.

I finally couldn't take it anymore, so I crashed a segment into the latest Grammar Girl podcast. 🧵
