Why are planetary scientists, astrobiologists and and SETI scientists so negative (pissed off, even) about Avi Loeb’s repeated claims that 3I/Atlas may be an invading alien spaceship?

This would be good news to help improve the drought situation in Arkansas and Mississippi! Much of West Tennessee including Memphis were dropped from any abnormally dry areas last Thursday.

November 10, 1975 4:15-6:00pm: Fitzgerald radios Anderson "I have lost both radars, can you provide me with plots?" "Charlie on that, Fitzgerald."
Fitzgerald also cannot find the beacon at Whitefish Point, and calls for any vessels with information. They are told the lighthouse is not operating.

The cold front arrived last night and has dropped temperatures across the Mid-South 25-30 degrees!!! Over night, we're expecting our first freeze of the season.

Out of all the stats that will be in history books from Melissa, this is the most astounding to me.
GLM data was recording a peak flash rate of 700 strikes per minute — nearly 12 per second — as it made landfall on Jamaica. That’s rewriting our understanding flash density in tropical cyclones.

The 3-month Oceanic Nino Index (ONI) just hit -0.5C (rounded from -0.451C). This is the minimum threshold for a La Nina. (Note: a La Nina Advisory is in effect.)

Thanks to some vigilant friends out there, I have a nearly-complete 87-hour radar loop of #Melissa 's approach to #Jamaica. The loop abruptly ends when the radar is lost (either loss of communication with it or loss of the actual structure).

I deeply respect the work that's been invested into exploring our approaches to tracking high-end tropical cyclones, but I can't in good conscience remain silent regarding the Saffir-Simpson hurricane wind scale (SSHWS) and discussion around a so-called category 6. 🧵 [1/5]

Obvious wavenumber-5 mesovortex pattern within #Melissa’s eyewall earlier today — when the simulation matches reality. Just two decades ago, the very existence of mesovortices was still a matter of debate.

I keep a pretty thorough spreadsheet of tropical data. With most storms it's at most 3-hourly updates, but I made this chart with room for the hourly updates Melissa had across Jamaica. It's always amazing to see how quickly storms weaken over land.

Melissa was a Category 5 hurricane for 36 consecutive hours. Only 4 other hurricanes in the satellite record – Irma (2017), Ivan (2004), Mitch (1998), and David 1979 – lasted as long as a Category 5 hurricane. Typically Cat 5s last about 18 hours before weakening.

Given higher than usual confidence of rapid intensification (RI) from analyses of an exceptionally favorable environment & with the aid of newer hurricane models (HAFS) & Google DeepMind, NHC was able to skillfully predict Melissa's RI days in advance.

While the eye of #Melissa was making landfall, did you notice the standing wave on the Eastern side of the island?
The mountains in eastern Jamaica reach upwards of to 7,000 feet, and likely wrung out a ton of additional moisture. Looking here for flooding and landslide reports in the coming days.
