A reminder - before Trump, MAGA, Musk and Fox rewrote history - that this is what the entire country agreed had happened five years ago today:

The first thing ICE did when it was created was raiding meat processing plants in the Midwest and south to help quell labor disputes over safety violations and keep those who weren't detained from getting legal protections as many had kids who grew up locally and were citizens with political power.

every single day i log onto this site and see something that makes me say “what could that possibly be in response to” and then a softer, sadder “oh.”
i could conceivably make this, but i would not be putting a trans version of the confederate flag on it lol

I still think there are some (very few) right-of-center people who have sincere beliefs and stick to them consistently, but it's pretty incredible to see that 90% of right-wing discourse about the sanctity of constitutional rights was completely empty.

you can't have a competitive meritocracy and property inheritance. they're inherently contradictory. there are decades of dipshit libertarian pseudo-intellectuals crying and pissing themselves about this fact on paper and getting rewarded for it but that doesn't change the truth

There's a reason I homeschool my AuDHD child even though I've gotten so much pressure & criticism over it. The public schools cannot accommodate her with their mostly limited to"more time on tests" resources and we can't afford $$$ schools that only -might- be able to support her diverse needs.
This is what frustrates me so much about these articles: Propagating the narrative that large numbers of kids are faking disabilities is just going to result in a world where disabled people are *even more* scrutinized when they ask for accommodations!
My kids go to a "rich" public school. My daughter is 7 and cannot read; she is a sweet, caring, intelligent child, but if you spend a moment with her it is clear that she has ADHD an order of magnitude more serious than what you think of when you hear "ADHD." Anybody questioning her IEP can fuck off

I would rather have a world where we all trust each other and accept that a few people will take advantage of it than a world where folks have to perform disability constantly in order to get the help they need. Let kids have an extra 30 minutes on the test, jesus fucking christ

People talk often about how all of our institutions are crumbling, but I gotta say, the institution protecting powerful people from ever facing consequences for sex crimes, a load-bearing institution if there ever was one, seems to be holding up quite well.

As usual the "economic anxiety" argument is being deployed to whitewash the odious views of wildly privileged people who want to get into power and make thing even worse for the poor. If this kid is racist it's because he's racist, it's not because he's struggling.
