I used to manage wine programs for movie theaters and I am in the extremely unique position to say with professional certainty that the answer here is a crisp Albariño.

hope, kindness and I would argue above all - grace

which can often feel like the hardest thing of all, especially in these times, but increasingly feels like the most vital. the ‘what we are to each other’ part of the equation
Knives out: the upper middle class are squabbling vicious children who do not deserve their inheritance

Glass onion: the new elite are the stupidest murderous cunts alive and deserve your scorn

Wake up dead man: those preaching anger as salvation are leading you to death, hope and kindness matter

it is my duty to inform you all that Hackers (1995) is now on Netflix

and is still just as gloriously daft as the day it came out

someone once said to me, after I went off a show (I think):

“I can’t understand how you can love something, then suddenly decide you don’t anymore and need to run it into the ground”

I don’t do that anymore but increasingly, istm like that mentality defines *all* pop culture discourse

Thread. Human connection is a necessity. It is one reason I’m not entirely anti-social media.

You get to read things like this.
Thinking about how moving away from people-first is a growing trend, and how this is something quite important. It's been on my mind since my local McDonald's refurbished, and there's a reason for that.

I’ve done it

I’ve come across an online argument where I’m reasonably certain *both* sides are in fact bots

or at the very least paid ‘conversation-shaper’ accounts

social media is officially dead, time to bring back livejournal

and - certainly in the case of Friends at least - would actively rewrite jokes on the spot during taping, if the original one *didn’t* get the laughs they hoped for

honestly, the idea that ‘laughs = not funny’ could only ever come from someone who knows they could never create endless jokes on cue
They're not laughter tracks, they're a live audience. The shows would be less funny without them, because the actors use audience reactions to judge the timing, and timing as the (actually correct) cliche goes is everything in comedy.

I won't change your mind as you don't know what you're watching.

In 2023 I became obsessed with videos of dads in cargo shortswaiting in parking lots during Taylor Swift's Eras Tour. So when she came to town, I grabbed a camera and headed down to talk to them. I thought it'd be funny. It turned out to be something else entirely.

see also: ‘I predicted how it ends, therefore it sucks’ and its creative counterpart, ‘if the audience can predict this, it sucks’

stories are how we learn language! you are *supposed* to be able to sense how they’ll end! and meeting expectations is a sign of strong storytelling fundamentals!
The paragraph about TV Tropes is spot on. I can't bear that approach to criticism where the main aim seems to be asserting superiority to the work. People who'll identify an influence and be like "Ah, rumbled!" episodes.ghost.io/art-criticis...
You are not smarter than the art you critique
Here's my best advice for young critics: Don't presume you know better.

also, it’s not like there’s not an audience for basically every form of this

there’s a reason one of the very most equitable *and* profitable corners of the internet (for probably everyone?) is DadTube
I have always said it, I will continue to say it, we are limiting the productive potential of millions of freaks by demanding they earn a wage to survive instead of enabling them to do whatever thing their brain is broken for

There's a folk story about various guitarists hearing some song on the radio and learning to play the extremely difficult guitar line, only to discover later there were two guitars playing. I think all art is a bit like that, creating your own style by reverse-engineering the art you like.
