I once got a couple of kids to read a bit of the Canterbury Tales by telling them it was way too old for them and would probably go right over their heads. They sure showed me 😅

Feels like a moment for intent/impact: even if her intent isn't to establish that she is the boss of you, the fact that it keeps happening isn't respectful of your time and is negatively impacting your working relationship.

Reminder from your resident high school lubrarian: if you plan to do a Banned Books Week display and programming, prioritize living marginalized authors. Use this time to help those who need it the most.

This week at an event for THE PEOPLE’S PROJECT, a reader asked in a gracious and cheeky way what I would hope white readers in particular would get out of the book. Or more directly, what I would TELL white readers. And this was basically my answer:

African-Americans are experts on America.

America should listen to Black people

Snagging one of the last bouquets of the season from our local flower farm. Flowers are one of my most reliable sources of joy and I'm soaking up every drop from these, to get me through the long, quiet winter.

I still remember looking for my first PCP as an adult & thinking "I want to find one in town so when I'm sick & have to go to the doctor, I won't have to drive far." And then finding out that every time I was sick, they wouldn't have any appts for 6 weeks, so I would end up at urgent care anyway.

I am grateful for my house and my independence. I am very fortunate that when I have had A Week at school and simply cannot people anymore, I get to come home to my own little house, where I can do what I need and want, without explanation or interference.

HOT TO GO!

(The "it hurts my feelings" section would be especially effective.)

We used to show it periodically at the chorus camp I helped run and listening to a room full of kids discover that movie for the first time was always magic. The way they would boo Rolf when he blew that whistle! And “woooo” when the Captain and Maria finally kiss

The whole thing.

what's the stupidest/randomest Simpsons quote that lives in your head rent free? Mine is the urge to say "you said go to bread" every time I am about to head to bed.

I keep calling and telling him I want him to fight and then…he keeps doing stuff like this. Thanks for sharing - I’ll mention this in my next phone call.

As the OP explains later in the thread, the Republicans are dad and the Democrats are mom. The problem we currently face is that even if mom 100% wanted to throw dad out of the house, she can't do it by herself. She needs help from dad's friends. And here we are.

Dad can't stop dad, any more than weather can stop itself, and dad isn't responsible for dad, any more than the weather is responsible for itself. But mom? She's supposed to be reasonable; she's supposed to keep things running; she is a *person*, seeing things, responding, making choices.

We need to shut down the whole calendar until we can get this figured out.

The thing for me is this isn’t some disaffected unsuccessful radical, this is someone who did everything you said they should do, and even they are saying, “okay, this isn’t going to cut it.”

Read this wonderful story about a man who is clearly dedicated to educating children* and then think about what you can do to make a difference. Just because we can't do it all, doesn't mean we can't do something.

*And even if he weren't, ICE is still wrong and should be abolished.

I hear you. It's about transfem experiences and although it definitely has sad parts, I would not describe it as an ultimately sad book. YMMV

It's the second book that skillfully used Our Town to make me cry in the past two years! (The other was Ann Patchett's Tom Lake.)

Another book that is too good to wait until the end of the year. I can’t really talk about why it’s so good because I don’t want to spoil anything but trust me, it’s wonderful! Thank you, @emilystjams.bsky.social
The book Woodworking by Emily St. James. The cover is a picture of chairs piled up in what could be a classroom.

Go to therapy and let myself be vulnerable and feel my feelings for 45 minutes. (This is made possible by my wonderful therapist and the emotion support iced maple pumpkin latte I will get on the way.)
