Why do I ask this every day?

Because joy is an act of resistance. Bringing joy to others is an act of resistance.

It can be overwhelming when the news is constantly scary. But bring joy to others and yourself. Resistance is a process, not a single moment. Remember there is always good.
What is bringing you joy today?

What made you laugh or smile today?

Have you brought joy to someone else today?

Opera nerd rant:

Miss Saigon (the musical) just transplanting the plot of Madama Butterfly to 1967 Vietnam instead of 1904 Nagasaki misses the mark a bit. While both are anti-imperialist, the context of the Vietnam war is drastically different.

The “maybe that’s the real punk rock” scene in Superman is the moment my trust in James Gunn for Superman went from 90% to 1000%.

“You think everyone you meet is like beautiful…” sums up Clark so damn well.

David S Goyer and Snyder could never.

That means it’s even more important now for those of us who review books (like me) to seek out those voices and highlight them

Knew this was coming. Something I've been noticing happening slowly for a while now. It's also happening in conjunction with the aging up of YA and the influx of romantasies that tend to feature cisallohet relationships and dabble in fascism-adjacent storytelling themes.

Trump managed to shift public opinion on immigration to the highest approval it's ever had just by being this horrifying, imagine if we took advantage of that. Because right now? NORMIES HATE ICE.
the only reason "abolish ICE" is seen as radical is that no one will say it but the far left. if every normie Democrat started saying it tomorrow it would move the overton window so far you'd have to squint to find it. my kingdom for leaders who understand they can shape public opinion.
Democrats officially going all in on the mealy mouthed “ICE needs training” narrative.

No. ABOLISH ICE.

I don't want a hungry ghost in a jar doing either of those things.
If you can substitute "hungry ghost trapped in a jar" for "AI" in a sentence it's probably a valid use case for LLMs. Take "I have a bunch of hungry ghosts in jars, they mainly write SQL queries for me". Sure. Reasonable use case.

"My girlfriend is a hungry ghost I trapped in a jar"? No. Deranged.

I just remembered how not subtle Puccini's Madama Butterfly was.

The titular character is a 15 year old Geisha, who gets abandoned after her marriage by an American. Which was a real practice at the time because colonialism.

The American's name is PINKERTON.

The opera is very anti-colonial.

My absolute favorite musical is The Secret Garden.

If you’re unfamiliar with the musical and only know the book or films, you are missing out. It’s rare to say, but I genuinely think the musical is the best version of that story.

It has a bot that makes CASM at a single request. It needs to be taken down everywhere and since the company is privately owned, its owner should be held liable for it.

As in prison time for CASM.

He was dumb and took it private. Consequences means he's wholly the owner and liable.

Google's AI search feature fucking sucks. I was looking for a specific book of art songs I had in college with a distinct green cover, and AI told me "try A COURT OF MIST AND FURY".

Yes, a romantasy book is a book of art songs.

Fuck Gen AI.

And while I’m cautiously optimistic about the next Ted Lasso season, the ending we currently have is so perfect.

“Father and Son” by Cat Stevens is always a gut punch song with lyrics that age better than a Scotch, Wine, and Helen Mirren combined.

And the show was about fatherhood.
Just remembered that Scrubs is getting a reboot.

And I’m of the opinion “why?”

If it weren’t for season 9, the final moments of Scrubs are perfect.

JD imagining the life he’ll live with his found family is so beautiful, and ages better the older you get.
