This. I decided a few years ago that a lot of art produced by absurdly rich ppl doesn’t do it for me anymore. I’m not saying it’s all bad. I’m saying I’m not attached to or invested in it. I don’t care what their commentary is because it’s so divorced from my everyday life. Rax says it better here

This is why we fund scientists to study things like oyster slobber even if you don’t think it sounds important
⚠️ Chinese researchers have invented bone glue that mimics how oysters stick to surfaces underwater.

The adhesive can reportedly repair orthopedic fractures in 2-3 minutes, even in blood-rich environments, and is bioabsorbable.

A new oyster-inspired Bone-02 adhesive can revolutionize bone repair without metal fasteners.

If you haven’t realized this already: Trump will continue to demand you sacrifice vulnerable ppl as a compromise. The Democrats will continue to do it until there are no vulnerable ppl left. This is based on evidence. The current plan is not working

Everytime Butker misses a field goal, a woman gets to leave the kitchen.
We’d also like some cancer research, please.
We’d prefer to be able to afford groceries.

Learning in school is not enough. You must continue to teach yourself throughout your life. Study history, read myths, memorize poems, get acquainted with the greatest philosophers & writers. In an age when tech is cooking many brains, we need an army of autodidacts.

this poem is astonishing and I am so grateful to Eileen for bringing it to our attention last year & again this year.
Dear friends,
As have become a habit, I mark each #autumnequinox by sharing a small poem by Xin Qiji. I also start my translation cycle of Chinese and Japanese poems and prose that mark the twenty-four lunisolar micro-seasons. Translation notes blogged here:

Correlation vs Causation

#tylenol #acetaminophen
Did you know that every single person who confuses correlation and causation ends up dying?! 😵

MAHA claims do not deserve to be engaged with on the surface level of whether they have any merit. They do not. The purpose of MAHA is eugenics and grift, and this needs to be repeated constantly. They want those they deem unworthy to die, and they want to make a fortune along the way.

The scientific illiteracy of the White House press corps is going to get children dead.

If you, like me, are the parent of a neuro-atypical child dreading this autism press conference, please remember: These are the people hurting our kids. Not us. They are the ones stigmatizing and pathologizing them. They are the ones peddling untested science. And we should be very, very angry.

You don't have to mourn people who despised you and wanted terrible things to happen to you. Hard to believe that this needs to be said but apparently it does.

One of the saddest things is when children have cancer, immune deficiency or need bone marrow or organ transplants.

And to add insult to injury, they’re unable to receive vaccines.

But YOU can do your part to help protect them by immunizing yourself & your family.

We are ALL in this together.

Great news for those of us who've been holding off on streaming The Smiths for a long long time bc we don't want to support or enrich this wanker in any way--

(though the deal isn't done yet -- the sycophantic slags are likely still in the reissue, repackage
reevaluate the songs stage of things...)
Morrissey Selling Stake in The Smiths' Name, Songs, Publishing
The Smiths vocalist Morrissey has announced he is selling his rights to the band's name, songs, and publishing to "any serious investors."

My state is led by mice who pretend to be lions. When Trump called and told them to jump...they said "how high, daddy?" I've never seen such pathetic small people but we have the choice to fight back. Check out my latest on the fight to gerrymander Missouri. open.substack.com/pub/fpwellma...
These aren't Missouri values
Governor Mike Kehoe's move for a mid-decade gerrymandering and crushing direct democracy has nothing to do with our values and everything to do with keeping power

10/10 would recommend finding a partner who makes you a playlist of their favorite band's love songs but includes a couple absolutely unhinged tracks for good measure

(Thanks, @malyndae.bsky.social 😘)

Kids and the elderly are going hungry and we can’t fund pediatric brain cancer research, but we can afford all this…
“Fight by refusing to abandon your humanity, your originality, and your will to explore. … Read and think on your own terms with your own words. Do not take your ability to do so for granted.”
Yeah, this might feel super infantilizing to give college students but with AI destroying the ability/will to study/read/write/think, this is the way.
I’ve done this for 2 weeks now and it *absolutely rules*. Best class discussions I’ve ever had. Best engagement with readings. They write in this worksheet for 15 minutes, then talk about their responses in groups of 3-4, then groups share with the whole class, and *then* we talk about the readings
Updating my comparative public admin seminar class—which was decimated by AI last year—to maybe be a little more LLM-proof by adding a 20–30 minute start-of-class writing & discussion activity. Will it work? Who knows! Full details and PDF here: governancef25.classes.andrewheiss.com/assignment/c...
