A choice that reduces our community power to say no to any destructive and polluting businesses being built in our shared backwards. Come on, all you NIMBIs, a multi-storeyed apartment building, to house PEOPLE, is the least of your potential problems being caused by this govt. Wake up!
getting rid of regional councils, one of the few voices at the table when it comes to fast track applications and the bodies that are supposed to monitor any ongoing consents, is certainly a choice

For a government that keeps talking about democracy they are really desperate to remove representation and accountability.

There are 39,400 people employed in local government and if we conservatively apportion these out equally there will be 3000-4000 losing jobs, incomes and livelihoods.

NZ has had two major reforms of subnational government so far: 1876 and 1989

As the guy who literally wrote a book on the demise of that first system, *and* as someone who generally supports more unitary authorities, my considered opinion is that this proposal is completely insane
No more regional councils - major shake-up of local government announced
The government says it is not a power grab, but about "making local government fit for purpose".

Can I just point out that these warnings are far, far from empty alarmism. Look at the states. Repro rights orgs started warning people years ago as the antis chipped away at our rights until finally Roe v Wade fell. We can’t let it happen here. We need a new govt. #nzpol
The banning of gender affirming care/ puberty blockers for trans kids is a TEST. This Luxon-led coalition is seeing how much pushback they receive on this issue to figure out how to ban abortion & contraception next term. They're anti-choice, they will act on this. #nzpol #abortion #pubertyblockers

#NZpol Just adding this, the figures they quote make me think that if you wanted to "save money" – as ACT keep going on about – you’d be demanding a very strong clean car mission, not a ditching of it.
#NZpol I found this while looking up ACT’s latest effort at being shit-stirrers, hoping for “ditching the Clean Car Standard entirely” -
