Today's local govt plans show (again) that we need protections for democratic local government and the principle of subsidiarity in the BORA.

I realised when I read this it's been 15 years for us, too. It's both a long time and not long at all.

lol this is totally about a power grab.
Do these guys have the foggiest idea what RCs do and how much this will cost??
otoh if you want to ditch envmntl controls & monitoring, pest control, arts and recreation this is probably the best way to do it.

No more regional councils - major shake-up of local government announced
The government says it is not a power grab, but about "making local government fit for purpose".

BusinessNZ on RNZ wanting an honest conversation about the pension based on misinfo. How about an honest conversation with BusinessNZ about the damage they’ve done to working people in NZ by not supporting a Living Wage, Equal pay, Pay Equity, FPAs and rigorous H&S protections. #nzpol 1/2

Let's be clear: this is not a 'scandalette'. This is a Minister of the Crown taking $27m allocated for one vote (housing) and spending it on another IN HIS OWN ELECTORATE. Amazing how Tory reporters can minimise this when it suits them.

This isn't going to happen because the New Zealand govt thinks climate change is a hoax. So checkmate, Mr Doom.

Your 'bonus moment of doom' for today:

"When the planet heats up beyond 1.5 degrees, the impacts don't get just slightly worse. Scientists warn that massive, self-reinforcing changes could be set off, having devastating impacts around the world."

3 massive changes you'll see as the climate careens toward tipping points
Scientists are increasingly concerned that the planet is headed for massive, irreversible changes due to global warming. In some cases, those changes have already begun.

This TERF shit is gonna result in dead kids and the Minister should be pilloried, dragged, reviled, hounded
The Government is banning new patients from being prescribed the most common form of puberty blocker and is explicitly aligning NZ's future policy on this matter to the UK's. PR below.

I know there's a lot to keep up with but in case y'all have forgotten, Chris Bishop misappropriated $27m from KO earmarked for stormwater, to build a cycling bridge his own govt's policies killed off.
He needs to be sacked.

Rinse and repeat
This is how the govt solves problems.

1. Find a rug
2. Grab a broom
3. Lift rug
4. Sweep problem under rug
5. Replace rug. Flatten lumpy bits.
6. Announce to media: job done, sorted.

Emergency housing motels end in Rotorua - but has it just shifted the problem elsewhere?
At its peak, there were more than 240 families place across 13 motels. Now there are zero.
