good riddance to Minister Judith Collins, who orchestrated the present gutting of New Zealand's science funding establishment

I've not seen or heard any coverage today that mentions this tiny detail, affecting 100s of millions of public dollars and endangering NZ's entire intellectual community
Judith Collins resigns after a near quarter century in politics
She has been in Parliament for more than 20 years, as the MP for Clevedon, and then Papakura.

remember when JuCo retweeted some article from the website that was all 'Jabcinda is an alien lizard person!?!?'
Ok, did Judith Collins REALLY retweet an X account talking about how the Irish were actually the first slaves in the Americas? If so, that's the NZ Attorney General promoting a white nationalist pseudo historical lie? Someone with an X account check please: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Irish_s...

This is an excellent article because, of course, if it actually is about protecting rocky shore marine life, there are good ways to do that without being racist.

Hong Kong was where I saw self-organisation happen - spontaneously, at very, very large scale - for the first time.

I think the what's in people's head and what's in people's hearts matter a lot more than the technological enablers. The sense of commitment to the people around you is the key.

After executing Alex Pretti on Saturday, ICE has shifted to primarily targeting bus stops and elementary schools in my community this week. I cannot overstate how much of the ICE activity in my community is just targeting places where little kids are.
Video from this morning shows ICE agents deploying tear gas outside a Minneapolis preschool as parents shout, “This is a preschool! There’s kids here!”

I tried to warn you guys that Chinese style censorship on TikTok was coming, that the people who had no qualms censoring topics on Douyin in China would have no problem doing it under new management, and here we are.

Literally thinking about this in the NZ context today, why is it always "the Greens should try to appeal to dairy farmers and people who drive Humvees" and not "NZ First should try to appeal to people who went to university and believe in human rights"
To the extent you have any education, consult with any legitimate news sources, know anything about what's happening in the world, you vote Dem. To the extent you don't, you vote Republican.

The fun thing is watching pundits strain mightily to cast this as something *negative about the Dem Party*.

Imagine a paramilitary gang kills 2 observers over 2 weeks, then shows up at your home to say, "You, observer, we know where you live."

That's a death threat.

If it happened to me or a colleague when I was a human rights observer in N. Ireland, we would've lodged complaints with three govts.
One human rights observer in Maine said agents followed her home, blocked off her street, and came to her door to say they know where she lives. Her children are now staying elsewhere, to keep them safe.
Now in Maine: ICE watchers say federal agents are coming to their house to threaten and intimidate them.
