On ICE raids and attacks in Chicago, local reporters have consistently shown up the national outlets attempting to report remotely.

Locals continue to break story after story even as the nationals are summarizing govt press releases. They've shown physical bravery in very dangerous circumstances.

"With local news in a severe tailspin for decades, there was a real question about whether Chicago’s media would meet the moment. But they have indeed," writes @markjacob.bsky.social in Stop The Presses.

He was always going to do this. Chicagoans have not rioted, so the administration just lied and said we have. We have not attacked ICE agents, so they just lied and said we did. There was no chaos here, so they created chaotic scenes by attacking people and filmed that shit.

Bridging my current life in Chicago and my past life in D.C., I argue today at @newrepublic.com that Democrats should ~never~ vote to fund this government. Make John Thune blow up Senate rules and Republicans wholly own the U.S. extra-military military doing war crimes against us, funded by us.
The Case for the Forever Shutdown
Senate Democrats actually allowing the GOP to stop funding the government is only the first step. Now they have to make the case that Trump’s government is illegitimate.

We need a bigger national spotlight on this building raid, fam. Agents dropped from helicopters onto the roof. Citizens and non-citizens alike were dragged from their homes in the night. People who weren't kidnapped during the raid had their belongings seized after the fact. This is madness.

"Jones, 27, is among the residents left at 7500 S. South Shore Drive who are trying to piece together what remains after an early morning, high-powered federal immigration raid led to the arrests of dozens of their neighbors at their South Shore apartment building."
Massive immigration raid on Chicago apartment building leaves residents reeling: 'I feel defeated'
The Department of Homeland Security said federal agents with Border Patrol, the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives arrested 37 people in the raid.

What DHS pulled in Chicago on Tuesday is wildly unconstitutional. They smashed down almost every door in the building, dragged entire families into the street, and detained people for hours ("Kavanaugh stops").

Ms. Fisher was held for five hours and another senior citizen was held for three hours.
Rodrick Johnson, 67, is one of many residents who were detained by federal agents during the South Shore raid. A U.S. citizen, he said agents broke through his door and dragged him out in zip ties.

Johnson said he was left tied up outside the building for nearly three hours before agents finally let him go.

“I asked [agents] why they were holding me if I was an American citizen, and they said I had to wait until they looked me up,” Jones said. “I asked if they had a warrant, and I asked for a lawyer. They never brought one.”

I was sent this by a Georgian this morning. 2025 premiums vs 2026 premiums for someone making $65k a year.

Republicans in Washington did this.

This is what I'm fighting to stop. This is what’s at stake in this shutdown fight.

Broadview Police have opened an investigation into an attack from federal agents on a CBS crew at Broadview, per BPD Chief Mills.
The following statement can be attributed to Broadview Police Chief Thomas Mills:

“The Village of Broadview Police Department has launched a criminal investigation into an allegedly unprovoked attack on a CBS Chicago TV news reporter’s vehicle on Sunday by a chemical munition fired from the direction of U.S. Immigration Customs and Enforcement detention facility. The victim declined medical attention. The Broadview Police Department expects the full cooperation of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security into our criminal investigation.”

👇🎯 We are where we are as a country because not enough people on the right half of the political spectrum cared about democracy & the rule of law above all the other things the way @billkristolbulwark.bsky.social clearly does. When the chips were down, he stood up. We need more to follow his lead.

Shorter JD Vance: You are not allowed to criticize ICE.

Goes along with shorter Pete Hegseth: You are not allowed to criticize the military's action at Wounded Knee.

And shorter Donald Trump: You are not allowed to criticize me.

It's full-on authoritarianism, all the way down.
joelhs.bsky.social
JD Vance is now using the term "blood libel" to describe criticism of ICE, saying, "The Democrats and the media — because they so hate the idea of a real border — are engaging in a kind of blood libel against ICE agents."

Somewhere, our ancestors wept.

🧵 You don't have to ask <if> or <when> American democracy will backslide. All you have to do is look around, every day now, at the things we've totally normalized that would have ended presidencies immediately in years past.

I definitely dont feel defensive. Just explaining this wild youth sports scene here in the midwest, which I didnt know was a thing till I moved here. Of course, may be the same everywhere🤷‍♀️
marthacarlson.bsky.social
Lived the last 30 years in/around Chicago and I can assure you that midwest high schools in this area (possibly mostly urban(ish) areas such as mine but not going to investigate) of all stripes take basketball very seriously
marthacarlson.bsky.social
Yes. I look at sports stars and know most have the benefit early on of training, family/friends—or schools—willing and able to expend money/time, etc that typically goes under recognized (speaking as a former sports mom) but puts them in places where they might be discovered.
marthacarlson.bsky.social
Professional sports *are* pop culture?
marthacarlson.bsky.social
This is not true where I live in the midwest. My kids’ HS actively talked about the trades and partnered that w/trade-related education and orgs.

I am still so pleased by the entirety of this💙 and the video where Phyllis talked about the hug my sister would feel ❤️❤️❤️❤️
