The global whaling industry experienced a boom c. 1840-1950 as technology allowed whalers to hunt the Southern Ocean around Antarctica.

Under standard models, we would have expected krill populations to have *exploded*.

Instead, they DROPPED exponentially.

Let's talk about the KRILL PARADOX.

Change in distribution and abundance of southern right whales. (A) Shows historical and contemporary wintering distributions (Figure 1 from Carroll et al., 2018), and (B) shows decline in abundance and subsequent recovery (solid line is the mean, dashed line shows upper and lower 95% CI). Contemporary sightings are divided into regions where large aggregations are seen during winter: Argentina (ARG), Brazil (BZL), South Africa (SAF), southwest Australia (SWA), south central Australia (SCA), and New Zealand sub-Antarctic (NZSA) and regions where sightings are typically of small numbers of individuals per year. The large aggregations are IWC management units and correspond to historical whaling grounds, although another 5 whaling grounds show little sign of recovery. Summer feeding areas are poorly described and so not shown.

I found it very courageous of him to speak up about this. It also shut his team members from demeaning comments on people who aren't all cis.

What happened in the UK with this conviction I quoted is horrible. Terrifying for trans folks. Nobody, no trans person should ever have to go through such! 🏳️‍🌈

Ik ontdekte laatst dat een goeie vriend zonder enige Linux ervaring en een drukke job al jaren Mint draait op een oude laptop "Windows draaide daar niet meer op."

Die weet dat ik daar kan mee helpen indien nodig maar die deed alles zelf.

Zonder iets te zeggen of te vragen.

Da's, zoals de USB tip die 'k gaf, inderdaad een verstandige zet!

Zo hou je je oorspronkelijke installatie nog voor mocht dat es nodig zijn: die ene app, die favorieten vergeten overzetten of een camera met proprietary software, in 't begin is er zo steeds wel wat.

Je kan zowat elke Linux ook uitproberen op een USB stick, zo weet je meteen of alles werkt zoals je wil en dan kan je later alsnog installeren. Of niet.

Met die stick kan je zelf ook overal waar je een machine van USB kan opstarten, je eigen installatie draaien vanop die stick.

De gebruiker bepaalt zelf wanneer die z'n machine herstart. Sommige van m'n machines gaan maandenlang zonder reboot.

Wat doet een modale gebruiker zoal buiten een browser of email cliënt?

Media bekijken?
Kopiëren van of naar een USB stick of schijf?
Af en toe iets afdrukken?

Dat gaat allemaal net hetzelfde op Linux, al zijn het soms andere programma's of ziet het er licht anders uit.
