I'm truly not sure there's a musician alive who a broader cross-section of Americans would agree is/was "cool" -- if you used that specific word. Seriously, who would top him for universal agreement? It's a damn short list if anyone.

I have absolutely covered a manager (ahem) where sometimes the best thing you could do was ask the exact opposite of what you were thinking because you knew they'd be contrary.

I think there's "giving him something to which to object," and this. For me, between the phrasing and the followups, it reads as either utterly uninformed, intentionally naive or intentionally provocative. None of which would cause me, as an interviewee, to give the interviewer much credit. JMO YMMV
