I was profiled in Variety for directing Bystanders!! So grateful for this interview and having space to talk about my experiences. Neat.

Also, that headline?? Iconic.

Screen DW Griffith in class and you get a bunch of racist propaganda.

Screen Alice Guy pictures and you get a larcenous poodle with his purloined sausages.

The choice is yours.

I highly recommend folks use Authory. So much of my work that would otherwise be gone forever was backed up there, and I can download my full archive whenever I need.
Also once again ARCHIVE YOUR WORK!!

The internet is not as permanent as you think, especially when it comes to your writing. PrintFriendlyPDF is a free Chrome extension that makes archiving super easy!

Proving my point, sadly: I just discovered that Film School Rejects site no longer exists and I can’t access links to my old work. But I downloaded all of my pieces and still have those thankfully.

Jacob was my entry into Paste, and that gig opened up my world as a writer and critic in ways I'm still building on. I wrote a lot of stuff I'm immensely proud of because we were encouraged to dig deep, to really fine tune our arguments, to explore cinema history. It was wonderful and I'll miss it.
Writing for Paste TV and Movies taught me basically everything I know about being a working critic. Allison Keene, Matt Brennan, and @sinacolad.bsky.social were all incredible teachers/editors, and I was lucky enough to take over the Movies section for 4 (pretty great) years
a terrible shame, for many reasons.

and the job market is so bloated with culture reporters with no places to write

This shatters my heart. @jacoboller.bsky.social was an incredible editor who let me write some absurd pieces. It’s a place I always told writers to pitch because of how great their movies section was.
Very sad to hear about @pastemagazine.bsky.social shutting down all of its non-music sections today. Will forever be grateful for the opportunity to write everything I did for their Movies section, and especially for the amazing @jacoboller.bsky.social’s trust and support on each of those pieces.

Most men probably
I asked this before over at The Old Place and the answers delighted me. So again:

Who is an artist you admire who you suspect would not like you if they met you personally?

I think Peter Dinklage is fantastic. I would absolutely get on his last nerve. He'd be looking for the door while we spoke.
