This tracks with the on-duty National Guard members I interviewed while covering the October No Kings march in DC. They did not want to be associated with ICE or immigration enforcement and were hoping that the public understood the difference.

I think the point people are trying to make when they respond that way is that America has never truly lived up to the ideal that's being aspired to. Maybe for some it's a precious creed, but for others it's nothing more than a lie meant to mask the ugliness hidden beneath.
People who say this are clearly speaking aspirationally about a shared American creed they hold dear. “Have you heard of the Trail of Tears?” is not a very helpful response, because they probably have and the priority right now is moral opposition to fascism and not fake-educating each other.
I fear my tipping point into madness is "Thus is un-American" posts in response to ICE terrorizing immigrants. I beg you to open Wikipedia (I would say a book but let's start small) and read up on The Trail of Tears, Fugitive Slave Catchers, Japanese internment, Indian Boarding schools & Jim Crow

Trump has repeatedly made false claims of violence in order to justify what he's doing. He's going to find some kind of pretext regardless of whether people use force to resist him or not.
Violence only helps Trump & may provide him an excuse to further trample our rights by invoking the Insurrection Act.
