Housewife (she/her) and unpublished amateur writer. Grew up a Southern Baptist in GA, currently an Episcopalian in MA after several stops along the way.
Also by local cultures.

I went in one day from believing I had been sexually assaulted ONCE to knowing the 'physical sexual harassment' school admin stopped stopping on 12 Sept 2001 fell under the lowest degree in our state laws.

Modern social media? I'd have known by that Christmas, not near 30.
(And worse than that, not having social media *will* foreclose one very common route by which those kids recognize that what's happening to them *is* sexual abuse, because predators keep their victims ignorant of sex ed to keep them from making the connections.)

Movie you’ve watched more than six times with a gif. Hard mode: no Stars (Wars nor Trek), LOTR, or Marvel, Disney Animated or Pixar.

(No gifs of Married To The Mob, Cookie's Fortune gets me fortune cookies, to the childhood with Bluth we go.)

@profanity.accountant So exactly how much has actually managed to slip past the residual filters from growing up Southern Baptist, anyway?

One thing not mentioned re urban turkeys (but otherwise I love this) is that what turkeys really like is nice roosting trees near open grass. Seen them there in Appalachia, seen them there in Metro Boston bc oh hey these little historical parks and cemeteries are open grass with nice roosting trees!
We talk wild turkey (their decline, and resurgence) on today's episode of science quickly.

Reminder wild turkeys, like pumpkins (squash), potatoes, and cranberries are indigenous to the Americas (turkey and cranberries from north America specifically).
Wild Turkeys Went from Almost Gone to Millions Strong
Wild turkeys once nearly disappeared, but today they’re thriving.

My mind keeps going back to Dad's stories about growing up in Appalachia in the 1950s and 1960s on food stamps and commodities.

And they did (and ate) some wild things to survive but never has he spoken about anything that rivals access to food just *stopping* the way it did this week for so many.

Reminds me of having my family try to do interventions on me spending a buck on candy twice a month while I was unpaid help for Grandma and budgeting tightly enough to pay for their Christmas with last Christmas.

If $5 or less a week breaks a budget, something MUCH bigger is wrong with the budget.
“At the same time, more than half of Gen Z members say they are struggling to make ends meet, yet a majority buy themselves a small treat, such as a pastry, coffee, or sweet, at least once a week. That can lead to overspending…”

Jamaica is the one place I ever learned about from a teacher who was born there and still madly in love with it.

I have to hope she's not in the US right now bc Trump, hope she's in the US because of Melissa, and either way it's going to break her heart.

You know you're psychologically ready for this admin to be over when you accidentally correct the classic mistake of processing election year as Scheduled Leaving Date from Jan 2028 to Jan 2026 instead of Jan 2029.

Why are you like this, brain?

They also had the obverse sides and features people knew to expect of those denominations.

When the Sacajawea dollars dropped, a bunch of parents at my school gave them to their teens. The cafeteria didn't recognize them as money. Lines to the tune of No Time To Eat.

Imagine the fights now.

In the first half-day with Hades II:

17 runs.
3 defeats of the 2nd biome boss.
1 attempt at the 3rd biome boss, and I lost when the health bar was under 1/5.
The big unlock just happened.

Running on God Mode for narrative reasons, the same as I did with Zagreus.

Runs great on 2nd gen Switch 1.

Sometimes we’re unsatisfied with a thing we made because when it only existed in our head, we saw all the things it could have been and when it’s done we know all the things that it isn’t, but we can’t see the way it expands into a million new things when someone else unpacks it in their head. 🖊️🦑

So I found out this week what the *current* AWANA curriculum for the age groups I was in looks like now.

They would not have made these changes if they did not know the criticisms of the 1990s version were right.

Beyond the political things people always mention, including the 2nd Amendment worship problem, I have a theory about how evangelical teachings about how prayer gets answered can lead to freezing.

As I was taught in the SBC, their model is that there are only 3 answers to prayer: Yes, No, Wait.
JD Vance berated the MSNBC host for her “bizarre” declaration that “prayer is not freaking enough” in the wake of yet another mass shooting.
