As a side note, it’s funny to see so many of these emails with thirsty academics repeatedly enact Marx’s bit in the 1844 Manuscripts about the power of money. “Oh Mr Epstein, your house in New York is enormous and, unrelatedly, your questions at dinner were so intelligent, so insightful, so deep.”

On August 17, 2017, Noam Chomsky told the Washington Examiner that antifa was “a gift to the far right”.

In between those dates he met with Jeffrey Epstein in Tuscon.

My theory for North America is that this is the consequence of the fact that every urban profession shifted to work in the wrong field: road engineers design public spaces (it should be planners), planners meddle with architecture via design reqs/codes. Architects became façadists.

Increasingly it's clearer to a lot of people what i have been saying for a while: people use "inflation" and "prices" to talk about their own difficulty making ends meet or affording big ticket items once "inflation" became a big media news story. It's not actually about CPI or even increases.
New YouGov polling shows more people say inflation is their #1 issue now than said the same at any point in 2023-2024 today.yougov.com/politics/art...

1. Term limits make legislators less experienced and capable. This means fewer & worse laws pass. It also empowers governors (neutral change), bureaucrats (a little bad) and lobbyists (very bad). 2. Term limits reduce legislators’ incentives to listen to or care about voters.

Before (2024) / After (2025) the pedestrianization of Pont d'Iéna, Paris 16. Before that, tourists taking selfies in front of the Eiffel Tower had to go in the middle of the wide lanes of general traffic. Now they are in a pedestrian zone and just have to cross a slow bus lane (20 kph = 12 mph).

79-year-old Paul Bojerski was born to Polish parents in a WWII German refugee camp. His family legally emigrated to the U.S. when he was 5.

He’s been taken by ICE in Florida.

🧵 Across the world, democracy isn’t just under pressure, it’s facing epistemic collapse: a breakdown in the shared ability to know what’s true, to reason together and to hold power to account.

A new guest paper by @eliothiggins.bsky.social and @drnataliemartin.bsky.social explores how to fix it.

It’s time to reconsolidate a counterculture and politics against this shit. Science, art, medicine, poetry, philosophy as the beautiful life, the fullness of human civilization, that they want to destroy. Humanism, not cynicism, not slop, not tech “””nerd””” culture
If a degree is just a piece of paper you need to get a desirable, good-paying job, someone invents a machine that can do it for you, and the notion that you might go to college to develop your mind for its own, non-remunerative sake is a punch line and an elite privilege, why not use the machine?

Going forward I want us to draw a distinction.

Real American Liberalism™ is:
Battle Hymn of the Republic, Sherman’s March, Radical Reconstruction, New Deal, Atlantic Charter, Manhattan Project, Marshall Plan, NATO, Civil Rights, Great Society

What it is not:
The Atlantic, Columbia, Chuck Schumer
No, liberalism IS the right word. We’re not tossing out the proud history of the set of ideas that has liberated half of humanity because internet communists got drunk on late capitalism memes, or a bunch of compromised centrist slimeballs adopted it as code for bolstering the status quo
