The numbers in here are hilarious.

Do you use AI on the job?
Execs: 87%
Managers: 57%
Workers: 27%

Planned investment by 2030: $5T
"Necessary" annual revenue to justify that spend: $650B
Current annual revenue: $50B
Three years into the generative-AI wave, demand for the technology seems surprisingly flimsy
Investors expect AI use to soar. That’s not happening
Recent surveys point to flatlining business adoption

As faculty I’ve come to deeply understand that the university is never on our side. They’ve turned into businesses run by conservative neoliberal fools who care more about clout and finances than about the mission of higher education. Sad but not surprising.
So apparently the administrators at Northwestern have caved to the extortionist demands of the Feds. Faculty voted 595-4 AGAINST this measure.

My flight got diverted to Shannon airport because it had a longer runway since a flap wasn’t working properly for landing. We are now in the process of waiting 2 hrs for a bus to drive us 2 hrs to Cork. FML

Well well well looks like astrophysics just became relevant to your daily lives.
This is pretty massive.

There is scant detail so far but they say "solar radiation" has caused problems for some aircraft.

This *could* be related to single-event upsets, where cosmic rays trigger computer errors. I've asked Airbus if they can share more detail.

The European aerospace giant said it had found that intense radiation from the Sun could corrupt data crucial to flight controls.

What’s the point of exploring the Universe?

#AskEthan

With so much going on in the world and so many problems to solve, why should we be investing in exploring the Universe?

We must always remember.

There are so many problems, all across planet Earth, that harm and threaten humanity. Why invest in researching the Universe?

Corporate Media is going to pretend that Trump is heartbroken about the two West Virginian National Guardsmen being shot in DC, but the entire point of moving a standing army into a peaceful city was to induce violence by The People to justify more violence by Trump on The People in retaliation.

No industry is perfect. But the imbalance is hard to miss. One sector must prove its products are safe & effective. The other profits by avoiding that responsibility. If we care about transparency and accountability, scrutiny shouldn’t be one-sided. (Source: For The Greater Glory of Science) #EpiSky

I need to remember that right now when I see people post about “MTG” they probably mean the congresswoman and not Magic the Gathering. Things could get very confusing for me.

The party that promised "free speech on campus" has made sure there can be no free speech on campuses.
This week, I withdrew from a speaking engagement at a public university because they sent me a list of prohibited “words & concepts.” I will not humor this censorship. It does a disservice to the stories I’m discussing & the audience, who deserve unfettered access to information & conversation.

Caveat: I DO want to ‘do my own research’ when it comes to active galactic nuclei (AGN), I.e. supermassive black holes that live in the centers of galaxies & which are actively consuming large masses of gas.

But for the rest of it, yeah, pls y’all experts tell me the answer?
I do not want to “Do my own research.” I want to pay trained accredited experts to do the research, trained accredited experts to report on findings, and trained accredited experts to make policy based on them.

I am busy af with my own job, I don’t need to do eight zillion more.
