Dear Lord. Centrelink says 144 different parts of its system have been operating unlawfully or erroneously.

This scandal of 44k overpaid debts is just ONE of the 144 issues they say they've identified.

The welfare system is in complete crisis & disarray

This news comes out the same day that the Australian government announced it was going to automate the NDIS. The present, the past, and the future all look the same today.

In 1982, UK post-punk band Killing Joke released a song called The Hum, seemingly about an endless droning sound that kept people silent and repressed at home or drew them outside to drive them insane and eventually kill them. A lot of people thought Killing Joke were nuts. Not quite, it seems.

tech regulation hypothetical(?) of the day:
When an adult gets kicked off a social media site because the platform erroneously assumed they were a minor, can they take legal action over infringement of political communication against both the website and government?

Addicted to secrecy feels too kind. To me, it’s only a government who wants to do illegal shit makes it harder to ask them questions and see their work.
Labor wants to ban whistleblowers from anonymous FOI requests, charge you to access your own information, and massively expand what they can hide from you.

Only a government addicted to secrecy looks at FOI & thinks "the problem here is that the public gets too much information"

Sometimes I feel like it’s good to put numbers into terms that are easy to understand for regular people, so here is my latest piece regarding the firing of Antoinette Lattouf:

How many Bluey episodes could the ABC have made with the money they wasted on the Lattouf case? – The Chaser
We ran the numbers to find out how many episodes could have been made if the broadcaster had different priorities.

What a coincidence that Australia - a government that makes a lot of money selling things that are used to bomb Palestinians - just kicked off their policy of banning kids under 16 from social media.

So, who is distributing the talking points indeed.
First Van Jones, then Sarah Hurwitz, now Hillary Clinton with these talking points about social media and carnage in Palestine …

It’s clear the talking points are being distributed.

By whom????

We need a media outlet that aspires to be mainstream but that refuses to take government plans at face value, or to assume goodwill.

For instance, reporting on the NDIS should ASSUME that any "reforms" are designed to reduce spending, and that that goal is what staff will be rewarded for.

Today is International Day of Disability. So, if you see any Australian politician saying ANYTHING about supporting people with disabilities today, call them on this bullshit.
EXCLUSIVE: Funding and support plans for national disability insurance scheme participants will be generated by a computer program and staff will have no discretion to amend them, under a major overhaul of the NDIS to be rolled out next year, @australia.theguardian.com can reveal.

This is going to be an absolute disaster. It is colossally stupid, unethical in the extreme, and it’s going to ruin lives.

I made an album that was just different versions of ‘932 recordings of emergency vehicle sirens stuck together’? mjoneill.bandcamp.com/album/932-si...

However, even weirder might be when I tried to do the same thing with recordings of Australian corvid birds - mjoneill.bandcamp.com/track/the-fi...

I’ve developed this stance where I’m just consciously refusing to learn anything about 6-7 outside of its existence as a trend. I feel like I’m at the age where I’m like - man, I just shouldn’t know what kids are up to or talking about. That’s important for kids and adults. Church and state thing.

The only clear conclusion here is that we are soon to be beset with youths
lol Malcolm Roberts asking why Bluesky is exempted from the social media ban. He claims it could be "political bias" because it is a "left wing hangout" and X is included and it's a "conservative hangout".

eSafety says Bluesky has been assessed as "very low risk" with around 50,000 Australian users
