The other reason the Defence Force is targeting young people is that there’s a talent shortage - nobody’s signing up. Their hope is that young people won’t know why nobody is signing up.

FYI, cops have the same problem. Governments want to fund cops, nobody wants to be one.

What’s crazy is they COULD buy their way out of it. All HRW said was ‘just ask the Saudi government to set the activists free’. They didn’t even ask the comedians to boycott it. But, for some reason, that price of ‘try and help’ was too high.

Recently saw @zander.supertonic.au give a talk on the most bonkers sophisticated sound design work for an indie game I could imagine. And, midway through, he still went ‘oh yeah, I realised you could just pitch this sound down and use it again elsewhere and it worked fine’. All techniques are good.

Sound design is my favorite part of making music, and arguably what I am best at, but I would NEVER.

Sound design is for everyone, and I am good with however you do it, whether you program every sound from scratch or just pick out presets that you like.

Just a reminder that when people talk about computers and algorithms running everything and how much money the people in charge know about us - we still regularly get ads for fast food that is roughly 10,000 miles away. (That’s not an exaggeration.)

Very telling that Human Rights Watch went - ‘we don’t need you to boycott it and we won’t take your money, all you need to do is honestly describe the Saudi government’s stance on free speech’ and none of them did it. Ansari just wants to pay a rich people fine and then do what he wants.

He’s basically saying we should tax corporations who replace workers with AI and then pay that money to the workers. Which, by my reckoning, is not a bad idea but seems to elide several things about American governance that may make all that irrelevant by end of the year.

A striking thing about articles I’ve read claiming to “study the effects” of generative AI on student writing skills and consumption of information is that (1) they nearly always find the effects are negative and (2) most “conclusions” are still written assuming that we must use AI, for some reason.

Can you put into words what that purpose is? You and the frog have really become icons of this protest.

There’s been a nice overall whimsy that has shown up. The frog is amazing. We had a bunch of other inflatable people here last night, too. I saw people playing Twister the other day.

What they rely on is fear. So by coming out in an absurdist manner, it speaks to them, to some extent, that we’re actually not that afraid.

It also dismantles their narrative a little bit. When they try to describe this situation as “war-torn,” it becomes much harder to take them seriously when they have to post a video saying [U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security] Kristi Noem is up on the balcony staring over the Antifa Army and it’s, like, eight journalists and five protesters and one of them is in a chicken suit.
