This is full of mildly astonishing revelations about right-wing influence at the BBC, but foremost among them is the fact that he was advised that writing for the New Statesman was effectively unacceptable but doing so for the Spectator was fine - indeed, advisable. I am flabbergasted.
The reaction to the Panorama edit has been nothing short of hysterical. Yes the BBC has some impartiality problems. But its biggest isn't the one you think.

New piece from me.

Excellent and detailed from LG pointing the finger fairly and squarely at Robbie Gibb.

As a small business owner I can tell you categorically that not every one of these business owners "believed that, with Brexit, the regulatory burden on their shoulders would become less"

It was quite the opposite and plenty of small business owners campaigned to Remain for precisely this reason.

🧵 …and the key part is the hand of Robbie Gibb once again stirring things up. How he can stay on the Board of Governors with this massive conflict of interest is beyond me. #r4today

Likewise the new head of BBC News. The outgoing one did terrible damage to its credibility and it is hilariously ironic that she is leaving because of alleged left-wing bias
More than any time since the 1980s, perhaps ever, the BBC needs a journalistic warrior to lead it. Someone who can see the shape of a fight coming and work out how to win it and have the will to do so. Davie was never that guy. It can't be a hack from the queue. Maybe it should be a refugee from CBS

The BBC's senior leadership resigning en masse over one dodgy edit in one programme, simply because the right wing press demands it, tells you everything you need to know about where the power really lies in that relationship

I mean, it feels like there’s a lot of bias in BBC News over the last 10-12 years but not towards ‘The Left’

Well it's an interesting media world when you have to resign for speaking the truth.
And the bastion of integrity that you have on your news show to provide 'expert comment' on the situation is Kelvin MacKenzie.

Glad that someone has finally taken responsibility for the appalling assault on democracy that was the Jan. 6 insurrection.

Slightly confused that it's the Director-General of the BBC, but what do I know?

This is like the time Heller is at a party with Vonnegut thrown by a hedge fund billionaire and Vonnegut says "That guy earns more in a day than you'll ever earn from Catch 22."
Heller: "Yes but I have something he'll never have. Enough."

1/ The US Government has quietly removed a memorial to Black soldiers who died in World War II from the Netherlands American Cemetery in Margraten, South Limburg. The move follows a complaint from the right-wing Heritage Foundation to the American Battle Monuments Commission. ⬇️

While ostensibly about one academic’s experiences with the NYT, the central point about the sheer, relentless march of, “critics say”, false-balance journalism should be read and understood by anyone involved in or just interested in the news.

There are people on the @thepinkun.bsky.social forum seriously suggesting we get Neil Warnock in for the rest of the season.

I’m not an expert on these things, but I seem to remember a time when something like this would have caused some alarm.
ICYMI: Microsoft’s charge “implies a more than $12 billion quarterly loss at OpenAI, said Firoz Valliji, an analyst at Bernstein.”

That “would mark one of the largest single-quarter losses for a tech company in history.”

It's really important to note that not only was Watson a racist and misogynist but his contribution to the double helix was listening to a Rosalind Franklin lecture and getting mad because Francis Crick wouldn't invite him to his sex parties.
Hey folks, as news of Watson's demise spreads, please don't set aside his weighty legacy of misogyny and racism. He was truly among the worst of us. www.vox.com/2019/1/15/18...
