whenever i encounter people who say they can't understand shakespeare verses I always send them this clip from the 2019 Shakespeare in the Park production of Much Ado About Nothing

I already wasn't going to because of the HP fanfic thing, but even beyond that it just sounds like trauma porn that luxuriates in female suffering, and I'm really just not into that.

It cannot be made clearer.

If you continue to support the Harry Potter franchise in any way, you are directly funding the removal of trans people's human rights in the UK.

I did too! I think we should all compliment each other more on successfully doing normal things.

The owner of this Korean restaurant just commented "perfect eating" because I finished my soup, and this is the sort of affirmation I think we all need more of right now.

Honestly I just wish I could be that unbothered and cozy all the time.

Can’t decide what to buy on Prime Day?

Try: absolutely nothing, and then go support indie bookstores instead 📚

The all-knowing bsky mods gave Erin Biba a 24 hour suspension for a months-old skeet about Christian Zionism, and I’m sure it’s just a coincidence that this happened when she’s been vocally criticizing Jay

#yeg PARENTS. How's it going? Do you need a little coffee break? Bring the kiddos down to Audreys 10am-12pm weekdays. We're reading stories. Because we care about parents, kids and especially our teachers.

I'm seeing a lot of this in the romantasy space! there are books with minimal story apart from the romance, so you end up with an iterative structure where the leads go to a series of locations or make a series of small advances on their MacGuffin quest, as set dressing for their escalating intimacy

A new thing we’re noticing is books where way less happens than you’d expect for their length because of worldbuilding info dumps or long scenes of explaining plans. You get through a 100,000 word novel and realize the whole story was spent picking up magic groceries.

I don't really mind when they call me Dr Rookwood since, as you say, they're just trying too hard to be respectful. (I do correct them, though, since I have not earned that particular distinction.) "Mrs" just feels weird and matronly, though, and I don't like that it presumes a marital state.
mollyrookwood.bsky.social
Pondering how (and whether) to tell students that addressing someone as "Mrs" in an academic email is usually not a great plan. (Technically it's accurate and "Dr" isn't, but they don't know that.)

Spiritfarer is incredible! It did make me cry, but in such a healing sort of way. Just beautiful.

I blew through this game recently during a particularly bad mental health time, and it was so unbelievably calm and comforting! Absolutely adored it.

Much appreciated, thank you!

I can't figure out how to search for lists, but could you link the twitter and Bluesky antisemites one? Seems like one I should be using for blocks!

Entirely agree. Even if it weren't environmentally catastrophic and built on theft and also inaccurate and also often racist, I think it's such a shame and such a disservice to ourselves as thinkers and writers to outsource the thinking and writing part. (Gestures at evergreen Ted Chiang quote.)

Yep. That's basically what I'm saying in my presentation, and then I explain that some things that currently get called AI (like spellcheck) are actually just computer programs, and they're still allowed to use those as long as they check the results for errors.
mollyrookwood.bsky.social
The other part of it is that none of it is actually intelligent. We seem to be calling everything AI now, whether it's an LLM or a simple computer program that has been around for decades. So I'm trying to explain which algorithmic tools they can use, and it's just messy.

I have to include an AI section in my lecture for the honours thesis students on Tuesday, and having reviewed the university's PPT resource on generative AI, I'm absolutely stuck on my slide for how students can ethically use AI in some way.

My answer? You absolutely can't.

The heated floors in our house are something I never would have sought out intentionally, but now that we're having 6° mornings, I cannot tell you how nice it is to be able to walk around the house with cozy toes.
