I occasionally take pictures, sometimes of cats or moss, and I spend a lot of time professionally thinking about what things mean.

A story I found about Haiti:

In 1999, a group of Haitians were tired of political disorder and dreamed of a better life in the United States. So they built a small, 23-foot boat by hand using pine trees, scrap wood, and used nails. They called the boat "Believe in God."

The unemployment rate for Black workers soared to 8.3% in November. That's more than double the rate for white workers.

When governments team up to build software for their collective use, that’s called a software collaborative. There are probably hundreds in the U.S., powering your DMV, DOT, etc. The resulting software is super cheap, high quality, and private equity can’t steal it.

Test cookie from a batch of one of the traditional Christmas cookies - peanut butter blossoms, but with Dove dark chocolate instead of a Hersheys kiss. (The rest have been scooped, rolled in sugar, and frozen, to be baked closer to Christmas Eve.)

the idea that a handful of conservative legal scholars have an understanding that should supersede a settlement affirmed my generations of american is astoundingly arrogant, and the idea that trump — or any president — can unilaterally overturn that settlement is just despotism

A male rock ptarmigan (Lagopus muta) in winter plumage.

Ptarmigan is from Gaelic 'tarmachan' meaning "croaker". The p- was added when people mistakenly assumed it was a Greek word.

A bird forever warning people: "A werewolf!" (just in case of werewolves).

The Lewis Chessmen

These 12th-century chess pieces are packed with personality, and have such charmingly expressive eyes! ♟️ 👀
