Apologies to anyone legitimately in need, but I'm blocking any "I'm from Gaza, please donate at gofundme" accounts. I've no way to verify you are. For those affected you have my deepest sympathies, and I hope my monthly Amnesty International and UNICEF donations go towards making life better for you
A decade too late, I'm finally getting in to Friday Night Dinner. It's pretty great. But oh my god - the episode where they have Mark Heap round to dinner in S2 is so, SO cringey. Like, deliberately so, but our toes were curling and faces grimacing it was that extreme.

"Because No, we're not going to tax the moneylenders so civilised society is sustainable"
“Starmer risks his brand of pragmatism being associated with the politics of “no”: no, you can’t have a pay rise; no, we can’t fix the NHS; no, we can’t fix the roof. If he wants to redeem pragmatism, he would do well to remember that it is there to deliver on the promise of principle.”
A good time to revisit @jamesrball.com's provoking piece on why the child benefit cap strikes at the heart of the big questions: who are the Labour party, and what is politics for?

When the male pattern baldness finally became undisguisable, I got a crew cut. My mum said "you've actually got a nice-shaped head", which is probably the best and most believable compliment on my physical appearance I've had in adult life. Thanks, mum.
What is the best compliment you ever received? Putting aside whether or not you believed it.

A worthy post from the bad place about how wrong the world is and how great it could be. We need a World Spring.

One thing with librarians is that they’re acutely aware of *who uses libraries* - many of us might go though our whole adult lives without setting foot in a library, but for people who are a little lost and need somewhere to be, they’re a lifeline.
Sometimes I think it’s going to be the librarians who will save us all.

Recent research showed that a huge proportion (87%) of Brits rely on hanging wet clothes inside their homes – and they’re unknowingly causing serious issues.

A study by the University of Manchester found that drying a wet load of washing indoors can release two litres of water into your home.
The mould truth: Expert warns Brits of one common habit that brings damp into their homes
As winter returns, and households dry laundry indoors, new research suggests this is contributing to dangerous mould problems in the home

The BBC makes itself *extremely* hard to love with this stuff. I’ve worked in more than one small newsroom that’s discovered to its immense frustration that the country’s biggest news org has stolen its work with no credit whatsoever.
I guess it’s a compliment that the top story on BBC London’s TV/online output today is a direct lift of a month-old London Centric story? But once again the BBC is consistently the worst news outlet for actually remembering to credit others.

You might have ADHD if you’ve ever said to yourself, “Wow I really need this cup of coffee to function this morning” and then, not only somehow forget to actually drink it, but keep leaving it in random places all over the house. This repeats for hours and/or the rest of your life.

Though for what it's worth (nothing) my least favourite type of connections puzzle is "these words contain homophones for a particular category" and stuff like that. Less of that, please

*cough* that’s literally the divide between left and right *cough*
The biggest divide is not between “right” and “left." It’s between democracy and oligarchy. The billionaires who control our economy and democracy seek to divide us. They want us to turn on each other so we don't look up and see that they have all the wealth and power.

As always with those on the full dose of antitrans brain-addling, a reminder that when they say "gender ideology", they mean the existence of trans people, something increasingly well-documented across time & cultures, & celebrated with honours by the UK government.
This little transphobic rant by Hadley Freeman in the Sunday Times really shows how pathetic gender critical ideology is. They play victimhood every day from the national media, while childishly insulting the existence of trans and non-binary individuals, calling any criticism of that 'silencing'.

Dear the police: do you not feel *extremely silly* having to do this sort of thing? Or is it a nice cushy doss day, arresting quiet non-violent citizens for saying things, an easy alternative to dealing with hardened criminals?
As an older woman is arrested under the Terrorism Act for holding a cardboard sign, she's asked if she has anything to say.

Her response: "I oppose genocide. I support Palestine Action."
