One year ago today, a spectacular aurora display graced the night sky across much of the globe. This was my view in *Oklahoma.* What a beautiful world we are fortunate to live on. #photography
Pink, green, and orange aurora pillars with a SAR arc and moon-lit clouds over relatively still waters of a large lake. The andromeda galaxy between a red SAR arc and the Milky Way. Numerous pinkish aurora pillars with a bluish-purple sky and spotty clouds over relatively still waters of a large lake. This will be increasingly clear for US science too. The decades-long apolitical science enterprise, built on NIH and NSF, is gone.

We will have to think about how to rebuild.

The America we used to live in—the America we want to think we live in—is gone.

We’ll have to build again.
We want to think that the repeated, widespread abuse of basic rights by DHS; the DOJ actions against former officials like James Comey and John Bolton; the presence of 2020 election deniers across congressional and executive branch leaders; the unconstitutional dismantling of federal agencies; the consolidation of old and new media under leadership favorable to Trump; the use of lawsuits and executive branch power to intimidate and silence critics; and the clear attempts to subvert the 2026 and 2028 elections; and Trump's constant insinuation that he might seek a third term do not all in fact mean
that we have crossed the threshold into a competitive authoritarian environment.
But we have. We have passed through the veil. Whatever becomes of American liberal democracy in the near or distant future, it will be a resurrection and not a continuation.

The thing that is in a sense “artificially” induced is that they changed the diagnostic criteria as the relevant people keep trying to explain
atrupar.com
Trump on autism: "Obviously there is something that is artificially I think induced, whether it's vaccines in terms of these massive vaccines that are twice the size of a jar like that ... I would say don't take Tylenol if you're pregnant. What do you have to lose?"

Elected judges are *really* dumb.
nparikh.org
It is rare to find a tenured professor as ignorant and obnoxious as an elected judge. You are right it is weird.
nparikh.org
I think they are comically stupid and irrelevant and trivial to ignore. I mean, a judge? A *judge*? This is who you want people to respect? They are rude, ignorant idiots.
nparikh.org
Right. I do not think their rulings are binding. I mean the second thing not the first thing. What is unclear here?
nparikh.org
Is it another fucking economist or lawyer or something? These people are so exasperating. Just fuck off.
nparikh.org
Right. I don’t understand what you mean. I think “the court” is not legitimate and their decisions are not binding. I don’t believe there is any relevance to any ruling they make on the shadow docket in particular. They should all be ignored. What are you criticizing? Yes, the court is fake.

“They” *are* apart, “it” is “antifa”, the amount of punctuation I need to explain this idiocy is ridiculous
atrupar.com
Bondi: "Bondi: "Just like we did with cartels, we are going to take the same approach, President Trump, with antifa -- destroy the entire organization from top to bottom. We are going to take them apart."

That excludes things like special districts.

There are around 40,000 governments in the United States.

People ask what they can do in this moment: here's a crucially important election. There are 52,000 elections taking place next month, many of which will be determined by turnout.

Dispatch from Pennsylvania on a highly unusual state Supreme Court election—one of the few most consequential matters on the ballot anywhere in the country next month. New from me in @boltsmag.org: boltsmag.org/pennsylvania...

I suppose we all have a day like that from time to time, but Claude, relax, buddy.

Don’t go to some stupid Italian place or whatever like that regardless of what you pick.
nparikh.org
There is good Indian but I would say Burmese which has dope restaurants there and is not a cuisine you find well represented everywhere.

I dunno, I feel like I learned a lot from those movies. For example, never enter through the door. Use the ceiling or a window. If it is inconvenient for the guy to be the guy he is, he isn’t that guy, because mask. I could easily command JSOC with this kind of knowledge. It’s just a feeling I have.

It’s basically just the logic of Mission Impossible
nparikh.org
Well, he’s also a complete idiot, so there’s that.

Pretty awesome random moment in Central Park.

I also think NYC is a very good place to do this because of the diversity of the city’s industry and other things going on

For folks considering grad school in ML, my advice is to explore programs that mix ML with a domain interest. ML programs are wildly oversubscribed while a lot of the fun right now is in figuring out what you can do with it

UCLA in the ranks of institutions that stand up—and prevail.

And another [non-Scotus, of course] federal judge in the ranks of those who stand up for rule of law.

Courage and principle are contagious. Stand up, and support others who do.

UCLA’s funds reinstated after yesterday’s court order! Thanks to the brave researchers and their amazing counsel, including Dean Chemerinsky, who brought suit. This is just another turn in the ongoing fight, but a great result for now.
