Also, given the circumstances, what would his alternatives look like? Pass law with no electoral authority? Protest with no cause?

As an aside, I think practically this is always less about needing clear evil and more about stories that lack a proper foil for evil characters.

The goal of a space should be letting people exist without hate, not telling them to try another door if tolerance would shake things up too much
ohdeerthermos.bsky.social
A problem I've always had with the analogy is that irl it confuses what's tolerated by the in-group vs having a tolerant space

Also, it's important to note that, unlike everyone else, Harker really is just-some-guy. The fact that he and Mina are critical to defeating ancient evil is pretty awesome

I think the challenge people have with the book re: horror, is that the story peels back the menace of Dracula until we see what he really is. A dangerous but frail pest

there's so many subtle details in dracula (the novel). one of the major hidden ones is that dracula is contained in his castle by the transylvanians at the start of the novel. he's hemmed up there. he can't really travel freely even in his own country

I feel like Johnathan Harker is the most underrated character in the book. He's the only character that survives Dracula alone and without preparation. Him being ultimately scared by the experience helps keep Dracula a true threat. Adaptations that make him a weenie do the character a disservice

I genuinely think a lot of these guys thing "doing a Fox/Newsmax hit" once a week is an optimal amount of work

This is probably true, but even worse, I think most of this is just laziness. It's less work to have Johnson do these press conferences while everyone else gets the day off. Doing a meeting and storming out would be performance, but more effort
ohdeerthermos.bsky.social
I really just don't get not doing a performative meeting with Democrats
ohdeerthermos.bsky.social
It should be noted that everyone is very aware that Johnson and Co are not, in fact, working on an agreement. Both members and leadership more or less say this daily

I'm not sure if someone's written on this, but scrolling through, it's kind of like "suspension of disbelief" sub-cultures? There seems to he a lot of obvious inorganic content and people engaging with it as if it's real

You could expand on it a-la Stargate SG-1, where they've pigeonholed themselves into less effective terror weapons

Honestly, with the modern discussion of AI content, you could do something fun with how much propaganda plays into the war. Terminators are the way they are because of what Skynet predicts we'd think an unstoppable robot would look like

The more OpenAI stuff I see, the more I think Altman and Co think the music is going to stop sooner rather than later
ohdeerthermos.bsky.social
Honestly, I think it's some kind of op, the way these sorts of things are dispersed throughout their feed. But it's an op that's playing on real sentiment that too many people ignore
ohdeerthermos.bsky.social
The AI-cat thing is an example: a bunch of accounts, including large ones (non-maliciously) shared a racialized video. Where does that leave me if that content was relevant to who I am?
ohdeerthermos.bsky.social
There's also a tinge of "well *I'm* not that bothered by it/if you don't like it, leave" which tends to pop up adjacent to racial/religious content on here

I feel like she's looking at what her options are in the conservative post-office world and realizing she's not going to be a university president
ohdeerthermos.bsky.social
The numbers on bad and her options post-office are slim?

Deleted post about need of deletion placeholders after finding out that the confusing post was actually deleted

Most people need a computer to 1. Manage digital storage 2. Word process 3. Access the internet. And even if you're programming, you often don't need some hot shit to do so

You can tell the food discourse is dumb because "most food inside and all food outside of the Americas based on Capsicum, potatoes, or tomatoes is inherently the product of genocide" is inherently true and no one cares.

I think it's similar to the Biden dropout insofar as "President J.D. Vance" is something that a significant enough part of the coalition won't sign on to
