There was a 1980s game book that at one point had a puzzle like this but any answer would kill you and the book would mock you for thinking anyone would make a puzzle for thieves
As a casual observation, I love how a common and accepted fantasy RPG trope is the concept of a treasure room or hidden vault or secret sanctum protected by a puzzle that any remotely competent person can theoretically figure out, despite the fact that no one would ever create this irl.
