idk I'm bad at describing myself. She/her.
This was very very good, I highly recommend it.
Last month the Japanese American National Museum asked me to deliver a keynote speech on what is necessary to combat authoritarianism and preserve democracy. You can listen to it and the Q&A that followed here:

Thinking a lot of very uncharitable thoughts at the person who pulled the fire alarm for the building. The alarm hurts my cats' ears! I hope they step on all the Lego, their socks are always damp, and their beverages always lukewarm.

I love this whole thread.
I came to Minneapolis to report on what's going on, and one of the main questions I showed up with is "just what is the scale of the resistance?" After all, we're all used to the news calling Portland a "war zone" or whatever when it's just some protests in one part of town.

For @msnownews.bsky.social, I wrote an article about how ICE Watch is grounded in sociological theories of violence prevention.

The reality is that most men will only commit public violence in extremely specific scenarios and ICE Watch disrupts the conditions necessary for escalation.
Opinion | I'm a Minneapolis sociologist who studies violence. Here's how ICE observers are helping.
Research into how violence occurs shows that disapproval from the people around you can help reduce it.

Have helped guard a local mosque during their Friday prayers.

Been very cold but Somali restaurant offers us delicious, warm tea constantly.

Members expressed much gratitude & confidence this ugly time will pass.
Talked to a Somali man today who said his mosque last night was surrounded by neighbors ready to protect them against ICE if needed. Made me feel proud to live in this city.

one of the best things about this whole nightmare has been watching a whole bunch of folks who have clearly never been seriously political in their lives standing up and going, no, absolutely the fuck not, we’re not letting this happen
ICE and MAGA really did bet the farm on all of Minneapolis’s white people going “oh yes, please take away our disgusting, evil non-white-foreigner neighbors, oh thank you so much.”

it’s beautiful that they’ve been proven incredibly wrong about that - may the rest of the country do the same.

This whole thread is worth reading.
By now, asteroid 2026 Dreadstone has impacted the Indian Ocean, sparking a firestorm not seen on this planet since the K–Pg Extinction Event. Most people just want to be with their families. Here are three ways effective business leaders can leverage targeted KPIs to turn tragedy 😔 into triumph 💪

So apparently this cough syrup is meant to be taken every 12 hours, not every 4. Oops.

I'm still coughing though? Hmph.

I'm not a fan of corporal punishment, it's Very Bad, but also if you pull the fire alarm and hurt my cats' ears with that shrill noise, you deserve bad things.

(The cats are now okay, I have reassured them and given them comfort pets.)

MAYOR: Okay, so let me get this straight.

The reason giant sinkholes are opening across the city is because you guys built the ENTIRE place on rock and roll?!?

When in Portland, do as the Portlanders do.
My most woke opinion is that cities should completely ignore suburban commuters and design the city we aspire to be. They’ll either begrudgingly commute in by car, mode shift, or be replaced by others in foot traffic
"my least woke opinion is---"

That's enough. We've had enough people indulging in the "thrill of a little conservatism", as a treat. Of considering reactionary thought to be a salacious and taboo in a world descending into reactionary mania.

Give me your MOST woke opinions. We're bringing it back.

So it turns out... the US air travel system was incredibly, deeply dependent on federal funding to just run day-to-day all this time, to the benefit of private airline shareholders, when everyone thinks that state-run trains are leeching off the government. Weird!

If Harry Potter is more popular than trans people, that's an indictment of society, not trans people.

"Give up this hobby that is literally bankrolling our extermination" isn't a big ask tbh.

I had to give Shelley anti-anxiety medication ahead of her vet visit this afternoon, and close the bedroom door so she can't hide under the bed where I can't reach her when it kicks in. So now I'm trapped on the couch so she can be safe under the blanket with me. Oh darn, book time.

It is absolutely unfair how effective a meditation can be for calming anxiety given how much harder it is to do when you're spiraling. I'm glad it worked, but still, harrumph.
