If you read into Filipino American history in the late 19th to the 20th century, you’ll see A LOT of unionizations, strikes, and other labor actions—all working with other ethnic groups!

(It’s still October and Filipino American History Month, so I got my post in for the year! 🇵🇭🇺🇸)
But his assertion that diversity weakens unions ignores two things. First, labor unions have a long history of multiethnic coalitions. Second, it was the capitalists and political elites who tried to *exploit* ethnic divisions to maintain power. There is only one person here trying to stop unions:

As a civil (and not religious) holiday, Thanksgiving opens the door to a lot of new Americans to be able to participate in a broader America in their own way. No other public holiday comes close to the assimilating force of Thanksgiving

I dunno, man. I have zero emotional connection to pilgrims and all that stuff. But a public holiday at least nominally about gratitude (and also about togetherness) is a good thing.

Originalism really narrows the scope of the good it does
In @nytopinion.nytimes.com

"What we are meant to commemorate on Thanksgiving isn’t merely a mythologized version of our origins," our columnist Bret Stephens writes. "It’s a celebration of American rebirth — and of the possibilities, personal and political, that go with it."
Opinion | Thanksgiving Is a Celebration of American Rebirth

I once asked a bookseller at a large indie store how many people would have to buy a book for it to get the attention of the store buyer and cause an additional order and they said: Three.
I see some book piracy discourse, and, to make a positive argument in favor of buying books, your marginal ability to influence what books get published and support the careers of writers you like is massive compared to most other forms of media.

I disagree on the grounds that Rogue One makes me, the viewer, feel feelings effectively. Is it a messy chop-job rescued in the edit that is often disjointed?

Yeah, but it works - for me, but also clearly for a lot of audiences. And that's all that matters.
rogue one is bad folks. i have believed this since i saw it in theaters and no subsequent rewatch has changed my mind. basically a chop job until the final sequence, which is good (for star wars)

Is the SAT serving the mission of public universities?

CSHE Senior Associate Saul Geiser tackles this question in an op-ed for Inside Higher Ed. Drawing on his ROPS paper, Geiser argues that "treating the test as a neutral measure of merit is an illusion."

2/2. To the question of whether rich private universities are more concerned about the state or their wealthy donors, Stanford's behavior provides some indication.

Anyway, things like this are why findings like this persist:

"The high-income admissions advantage at Ivy-Plus colleges is driven by three factors: (1) preferences for children of alumni, (2) weight placed on non-academic credentials, and (3) athletic recruitment...The three factors...are uncorrelated or negatively correlated with post-college outcomes..."
