As someone who is generally suspicious of purity tests, I will say this:
Nobody forced Newsom to take those positions.
It's not like he was in a tight race, fighting for his life, and then the question was put to him in a debate.

I’ve had a few people ask “oh, so is disagreeing with Gavin Newsom on trans athletes a PURITY TEST?”
And yes, protecting trans people from discrimination is a vital purity test.
